The first comprehensive biodiversity survey of the South Orkney Islands, near the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula, has revealed that they are home to more species of sea and land animals than the Galapagos.Researchers from the British Antarctic Survey and the University of Hamburg, Germany, carried out the survey using a combination of trawl nets, sampling as deep as 1500m, and scuba divers. The team found over 1200 species, a third of which were not thought to live in the region. They also identified five new species.

Emperor penguins like these are the tallest and heaviest penguins alive today... But once, long ago, massive zombie-dinosaur-penguins ruled the frigid seas!

and once upon a time...not all that long ago, the aboriginal people in Arhnem Land - that's in the Far North of Australia - painted images of a plesiosaur. Sometimes referred to as 'Rainbow Serpent' -

A juvenile plesiosaur was discovered in Antarctica:

Reconstruction of a plesiosaur - a reptile, not a bird or mammal...lived on the Antarctic continent at a time when Australian Natives were drawing pictures on rocks...

Thanks, Fred Nerks. One of these days I’m going to ask SunkenCiv to add me to his GGG ping list again. Soon, I hope. This is so much more interesting than u know what. If we don’t persevere with u know what, then we may not have GGG.
