Hollywood can still mount a soapbox and recall the dark days when people lost their jobs in show business for daring to take an unpopular political position that was outside the mainstream. Whenever they're criticized, they proclaim, "McCarthyism," accuse their critics of "blacklisting," and condemn the deplorable "intolerance."
Hollywood has yet to accept, perhaps even to understand, that it is the entertainment industry that excels at this slanderous behavior. After California voters narrowly approved Proposition 8, which amended the state constitution to define marriage as between a man and a woman, it was revealed that Scott Eckern, the artistic director of the California Musical Theater in Sacramento, the state's largest nonprofit musical theater company, had donated $1,000 to the Yes on 8 campaign.
Eckern's freedom of speech be damned: The man needed to be punished. Producer Marc Shaiman's musical "Hairspray" had played at the theater, and he announced he would never allow anything he wrote to play there because of Eckern's donation. Shaiman's declaration triggered a blistering e-mail pressure campaign, forcing Eckern to resign.
Shaiman claimed to the Associated Press that he regretted that it came to Eckern losing his job and said: "It's a tragedy for everyone involved. You'll certainly see that no one called for him to resign."
Shaiman said he would never allow anything he wrote to play there, but he doesn't think that was creating pressure to dismiss Eckern? That confounds common sense. So great was the pressure that Eckern, a Mormon, also felt he had to donate a repentant $1,000 to a gay-rights group. Meanwhile, the theater bizarrely claimed it would not "impinge on the rights of its employees to engage in political activities."
This wasn't the only blacklisting. Los Angeles Film Festival Director Richard Raddon, also a Mormon, was pressed into resignation after his $1,500 donation to the Yes on 8 campaign was disclosed. Film Independent, the festival's organizer, put out its own Orwellian statement that "Our organization does not police the personal, religious or political choices of any employee, member or filmmaker." But one Film Independent board member told the Los Angeles Times that the "progressives" also berated Raddon personally with phone calls and e-mails.
Gay activists are correct that they have every right to boycott theaters or businesses that offend them. But that's exactly the right that anti-communists claimed in the middle of the last century, and Hollywood has spent more than 50 years condemning this as an attack on hallowed free speech. The hypocrisy speaks for itself.
It wasn't enough for Marc Shaiman to get Eckern fired. Next, he made a star-studded satirical video (appearing on the comedy website Funny Or Die) mocking opponents of Prop 8, casting the comedian Jack Black as Jesus Christ, who trashed the Bible as hopelessly out of date. It is more of the anti-religious bigotry for which this industry, supposedly so devoted to "tolerance," has become famous.
The cartoonish Christians in Shaiman's video sing it's "time to drop some hate" with Prop 8. They proclaim that they lied about gays, "but it worked, so we don't care." So "Jesus" shows up to "correct" -- and ridicule -- the idea that the Bible calls homosexuality an abomination: "but it says the same thing about this shrimp cocktail. ... Leviticus says shellfish is an abomination!"
This phony-baloney Jesus seems to be quoting directly from an Obama speech in 2006 that suggested Christian conservatives weren't reading their Leviticus. But neither Obama nor Shaiman will admit in the Bible there is also St. Peter's vision in the Acts of the Apostles, where he's told to abandon the idea of clean and unclean foods.
Shaiman also has his Bible-trashing Jesus sing that the Bible says, "you can stone your wife, or sell your daughter into slavery." This is also a common pro-gay argument, as if Christians today are all recognized to be active in wife-stoning and daughter-enslaving. When the Christians say they ignore those verses, Jesus scolds, "it seems to me you pick and choose ... Well, then, choose love instead of hate. Besides your nation was built on separation of church and state."
Only someone utterly ignorant would make a video where Jesus descends in a vision to humanity only to sound like a lawyer for the ACLU.
Hollywood loves to pose as the trendy defender of civil liberties, but clearly no one who wants to remain employed would ever dare to make a musical mockery of Shaiman and his blacklisting coalitions. No one has forgotten the ruined career of former "Grey's Anatomy" star Isaiah Washington for ingloriously using the gay six-letter F-word on a private set. From now on, no one in entertainment is going to feel safe making a donation as measly as $100 to a conservative defense-of-marriage campaign.
To the liberals, blacklists and boycotts and all that are ok, as long as done in support of politically correct causes. If anything of that nature is done in support of a conservative cause, then we hear the wailing about blacklisting and censorship and all that.

That’s the ideological equivalent of the following statement:
“It’s not Anal if it’s In The Ass!”
This time it’s the rainbow list..
Pretty simple for me. I won’t ever go to a movie again that either Black, Harris or Relly star in.
Actually, I’ve never seen any movie any of these people have made. Never will, either, after this!
I have no problem with them boycotting, I do it all the time, conservatives need to step up and support those who are being boycotted.
Couldn’t a Christian file a discrimination suit against the studios and production companies?
Did the harassment he received over his donation contribute to a hostile work environment? Christians need to push back on workplace discrimination.
The truth is Sen. Joseph McCarthy never publicly identified one single person as a security risk who didn’t prove to be an actual security risk. The truth is Joe McCarthy never pursued Communist-leaning screenwriters in Hollyweird. That was left to the House Un-American Affairs Committee (HUAC). Sen. McCarthy had much bigger fish to fry. The truth is that during the 1930s and 1940s our government was indeed infiltrated by Communists, comsymps, and fellow travelers who did pass along sensitive information to the Soviets. Sen. McCarthy was most concerned about spies in the highest levels of government particulary the State Department and the Defense Department. The Whittaker Chambers/Alger Hiss case was no witch hunt. It was one man’s word against another man’s word. One man was convicted of perjury and did time in the federal penitentiary. The other man was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. As far as the Rosenbergs go, even their sons now concede that Julius Rosenberg headed a major Communist spy ring that passed atomic secrets to the Soviets. And of course, we now know that Harry Dexter White, a high ranking official in the Treasury Department was a Communist agent as well. So who were the real villians of this period? Richard Nixon, Whittaker Chambers, Joe McCarthy. Hardly. These men tried to shed light on the serious problem of Communist infiltration into our government. It was Hiss, White, the Rosenbergs, the Ware Spy Ring operating out of Washington D.C. who were the real villains of this period. Unfortunately the liberal/left has re-wriiten and twisted history and created their myths about about witch hunts. What a bunch of crap. The problem is most people believe it.
The truth is there never was a HUAC. It was called the House Committee on Un-American Activities and it was established in the 1930s.
You’re correct. Sorry I was typing fast. But you get my point?
I watched a “documentary” edited from footage of the McCarthy hearings. The subject seemed to focus on an investigation of McCarthy, Cohen, and a guy in the military who “may” have received preferential treatment.
The whole thing was a circus designed to go after McCarthy, rather than the witchhunt that McCarthy was supposedly conducting. It was a communist produced film, sans commentary, that was made in the mid-1960s.
Deny it as they might, there WERE Communists in the United States (when pressed on the matter, they will say there was nothing wrong with being a Communist), and there were Communists working (knowingly or unknowingly) on behalf of the Soviet Union.
Democrats like Joe Biden and Ted Kennedy did far more to abuse their chairs while giving confirmation hearings to men like Clarence Thomas (Joe Biden outright lied about Thomas’ position on an activist role for the Supreme Court).
well I am fed up of trying to watch a programme or film only to see some sort of homo in it.
I have just turned 40 and have now been watching the older shows and westerns just because they don’t have all the homo crap in them.
we need to get our children more into making films, programmes, media, journalists, and teachers to take back the next generation as right now we are losing them to far left homo’s.
we need to get the word out and have a list of who donates money to homo’s, shops , actors, businesses etc.
all of us need to boycott them and make them realise that pandering to 3% of the population will not work nor will it put money into your pocket.
Once we do that and they start to see that we as the majority have the power then they’ll stop giving money and stop promoting the perverted homo agenda
don’t see why not the liberals and homo’s have been judge shopping for years to further their agenda it is time we did the same /
Lets get a list of those people so we can boycott them as well as companies
NIXON: ... CBS ... glorifying homosexuality.
EHRLICHMAN: A panel show?
H. R. HALDEMAN: No, it's a regular show. It's on every week. It's usually just done in the guy's home. It's usually just that guy, who's a hard hat.
NIXON: That's right; he's a hard hat.
EHRLICHMAN: He always looks like a slob.
NIXON: Looks like Jackie Gleason.
HALDEMAN: He has this hippie son-in-law, and usually the general trend is to downgrade him and upgrade the son-in-law--make the square hard hat out to be bad. But a few weeks ago, they had one in which the guy, the son-in-law, wrote a letter to you, President Nixon, to raise hell about something. And the guy said, "You will not write that letter from my home!" Then said, "I'm going to write President Nixon," took off all those sloppy clothes, shaved, and went to his desk and got ready to write his letter to President Nixon. And apparently it was a good episode.
EHRLICHMAN: What's it called?
NIXON: "Archie's Guys." Archie is sitting here with his hippie son-in-law, married to the screwball daughter. The son-in-law apparently goes both ways. This guy. He's obviously queer--wears an ascot--but not offensively so. Very clever. Uses nice language. Shows pictures of his parents. And so Arch goes down to the bar. Sees his best friend, who used to play professional football. Virile, strong, this and that. Then the fairy comes into the bar.
I don't mind the homosexuality. I understand it. Nevertheless, goddamn, I don't think you glorify it on public television, homosexuality, even more than you glorify whores. We all know we have weaknesses. But, goddammit, what do you think that does to kids? You know what happened to the Greeks! Homosexuality destroyed them. Sure, Aristotle was a homo. We all know that. So was Socrates.
EHRLICHMAN: But he never had the influence television had.
NIXON: You know what happened to the Romans? The last six Roman emperors were fags. Neither in a public way. You know what happened to the popes? They were layin' the nuns; that's been goin' on for years, centuries. But the Catholic Church went to hell three or four centuries ago. It was homosexual, and it had to be cleaned out. That's what's happened to Britain. It happened earlier to France.
Let's look at the strong societies. The Russians. Goddamn, they root 'em out. They don't let 'em around at all. I don't know what they do with them. Look at this country. You think the Russians allow dope? Homosexuality, dope, immorality, are the enemies of strong societies. That's why the Communists and left-wingers are clinging to one another. They're trying to destroy us. I know Moynihan will disagree with this, [Attorney General John] Mitchell will, and Garment will. But, goddamn, we have to stand up to this.
EHRLICHMAN: It's fatal liberality.
EHRLICHMAN: It's fatal liberality. And with its use on television, it has such leverage.
NIXON: You know what's happened [in northern California]?
EHRLICHMAN: San Francisco has just gone clear over.
NIXON: But it's not just the ratty part of town. The upper class in San Francisco is that way. The Bohemian Grove, which I attend from time to time--it is the most faggy goddamned thing you could ever imagine, with that San Francisco crowd. I can't shake hands with anybody from San Francisco.
Decorators. They got to do something. But we don't have to glorify it. You know one of the reasons fashions have made women look so terrible is because the goddamned designers hate women. Designers taking it out on the women. Now they're trying to get some more sexy things coming on again.
EHRLICHMAN: Hot pants.
NIXON: Jesus Christ.
Boycott the MSM. That goes for the old product too. There are works in the public domain and there are books. Hollywood doesn’t care what channel your money comes from, so long as they get the money.
If you have cable/satellite/dish, you are paying for the channels you don’t watch as well as the channels you do watch.
You two are hitting all the hot buttons on the loyalty to this country by Joe McCarthy. Thank you for your input. I’m saving your comments for future use.
One addition, Robert Taylor, the famous movie star of the ‘40s, was in the service during WWII. He later gave speeches about being FORCED by his superiors in the service to do a movie which he considered communist.
