Word For The Day, Thursday, 1/1/09
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
sanguine; adj.
1. cheerfully optimistic, hopeful, or confident: a sanguine disposition; sanguine expectations. 2. reddish; ruddy: a sanguine complexion. 3. (in old physiology) having blood as the predominating humor and consequently being ruddy-faced, cheerful, etc. 4. bloody; sanguinary. 5. blood-red; red. 6. Heraldry. a reddish-purple tincture. noun 7. a red iron-oxide crayon used in making drawings
Etymology: 12751325; ME sanguyne a blood-red cloth < OF sanguin < L sanguineus bloody, equiv. to sanguin-, s. of sanguis blood + -eus -eous san'guine·ly adv., san'guine·ness, san·guin'i·ty n.
Word History: The similarity in form between sanguine, "cheerfully optimistic," and sanguinary, "bloodthirsty," may prompt one to wonder how they have come to have such different meanings. The explanation lies in medieval physiology with its notion of the four humors or bodily fluids (blood, bile, phlegm, and black bile). The relative proportions of these fluids was thought to determine a person's temperament. If blood was the predominant humor, one had a ruddy face and a disposition marked by courage, hope, and a readiness to fall in love. Such a temperament was called sanguine, the Middle English ancestor of our word sanguine. The source of the Middle English word was Old French sanguin, itself from Latin sanguineus. Both the Old French and Latin words meant "bloody," "blood-colored," Old French sanguin having the sense "sanguine in temperament" as well. Latin sanguineus was in turn derived from sanguis, "blood," just as English sanguinary is. The English adjective sanguine, first recorded in Middle English before 1350, continues to refer to the cheerfulness and optimism that accompanied a sanguine temperament but no longer has any direct reference to medieval physiology.

Practice makes perfect.....post on....
very cool, I will look for it.
So happy to hear you had an easy time of it last night!
I’m so happy hubby fixed the barn roof last Sunday, had he not gotten to it we probably wouldn’t have any roof on the barn now at all. Winds topped 60mph at times last night. It was wicked, and scary at times. No way would I have wanted to be outside or on the roads last night.
Oh how cool!!!! Thanks for letting us know. I was planning on tuning in that parade, wind and weather permitting, this afternoon.
I finally turned the TV off, the in and out reception caused by the wind did not make for enjoyable watching of the Tournament o0f Roses parade -— which ha always been my fave.
we got back to the station at 20:39 and call number 2039....I took that as a good omen and it was. no more calls, I slept all night.
wow......it was that close to losing your roof, thank God your husband can tackle jobs like that.
Does the Cotton Bowl parade show nationally? I can’t find it on our lineup - darn it - wish I could! Go Texas Tech!!!
May it be a good omen for the new year!
I am very happy, and very thankful that hubby is able to tackle those types of tasks.
This guy doesn’t sound too sanguine about the Big O:

(Happy New Year!)
Finally, I have some time to enjoy myself at the computer and post-
The ‘rats’ political victories
In several key locations
Have led to a certain smugness
And sanguine expectations
But Obama’s rhetoric has changed
And he isn’t very proud
Of Blago causing him to diss
His corrupt Chicago crowd
That will set Nancy howling
And may well be the cure-
While Blago makes like a canary
Her agenda will be manure
Oh, and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
My husband and I are less than sanguine about the upcoming Administration. They are no comparison to the Bush Administration.
Happy New Year back at you. :^)
That Sun Bowl was something, I tell you. They’ve renamed the city to El Pas, because there was no “O” there at all.
Oregon State was 3 for 17 on 3rd down conversions, and Pitt topped that by going 2 for 15.
Happy New Year everyone. Thank you again to xs for covering while I was at work.
Happy New Year everyone
I was watching a Brit with a sanguine cut above a tatoo of a sanguine coat of arms on his sanguine skin, who was drawing with a sketch of the sanguine trademark of John Bull Ale with a sanguine pencil, when he asked me, in a sanguine manner, if I would be nice enough to buy him a pint.
At the 1:02 of 2:06 mark in the video, MrsVRWC is walking with Robbie in the left/center part of the frame. (I was a little further toward the outside of the street so I am out of the frame.)
thanks for setting the time for when she appeared, bc i was able to spot her, but doubt i would have been able to if you hadn’t specified the exact time. how cool that was!
