Snead, Ole Miss down Texas Tech in Cotton Bowl
ESPN ^

Posted on 01/02/2009 5:22:03 PM PST by Cedar

Ole Miss isn't just the team that handed Florida its only loss. These Rebels are seriously on the rise. Behind Jevan Snead's passing, Dexter McCluster's squirming runs and some big returns by Marshay Green, No. 25 Mississippi overcame an early deficit and beat No. 7 Texas Tech 47-34 Friday in the final Cotton Bowl played in the stadium of the same name.

The Red Raiders (11-2) converted a pair of early turnovers into a 14-0 lead, but Snead led the Rebels to touchdowns on their next three drives, followed by a go-ahead field goal shortly before halftime. Once Green returned an interception 65 yards for a touchdown early in the third quarter, Ole Miss (9-4) was well on its way to capping coach Houston Nutt's first season in grand style. This was Mississippi's sixth straight win, matching its longest streak since 2003, when Eli Manning was a senior...

This roll began when Ole Miss was only 3-4 and coming off consecutive losses following its stunning upset at the Swamp. Actually, it might've begun the week before when a late comeback at Alabama came up short. The string includes a win at LSU when the Tigers were No. 18. "These guy have such great character and it's gotten better each and every week," Nutt said. A postgame celebration five years in the making was practically worth the wait to the 44,000 or so Rebels fans, nearly all of whom stuck around until long after the game. When time ran out, one player tumbled across the 50-yard line and others ran around carrying flags. Several guys gleefully held up a wipe board with the message, "94 percent said we couldn't (...) WE DID." In the final minutes, Ole Miss fans chanted "Hou-ston Nutt!

I’m eagerly waiting for the day of commercial-free TV (besides the educational station).

Houston Nutt could show the Cleveland Browns, Kansas City Chiefs, Detroit Lions other “permanent bastion of shame” NFL franchises a thing or two.

And how must the retards at Arkansas be feeling tonite. The truly got the sh*t end of the stick with Bobby Petrino, after running Nutt out on a rail. SUUOOOEEYYY

Petrino might improve next season, but if not, the Razorback fans will be highly upset.

I’m off to watch the Bama game now.

I guess I am going PC. I am offended by your term of endearment for Arkansas.... no biggie, but it just doesn’t seem right.

SEC is doing a bang up job, loss for SC, wins for KY,Ole Miss,LSU, GA, Vandy.

I’m counting on ALA to pull it out, Ole Miss and KY were in the hole to start today too.

Actually, we are quite happy with Petrino, he just recruited the best class of players we have had in years. He did wonders with the scraps nutt left behind, we only had 3 senior starters and 9 freshman started.

It appears that nutt had his mind on football in this year’s bowl game, two years ago it was on his girl friend. He was texting her right up to 15 minutes before kickoff. Coach O was a great recruiter, but a lousy football coach and he left the larder full for nutt.

about the time that the “great recruiting classes” are supposed to start performing, Petrino will divorce you for the next great thing.

Being a USM grad, I must say, Ole Miss was never my favorite school. And recently it seemed I disliked them even more with their giving in to losing The Reb and being more PC about their mascot. But all that being said, I am proud that a team that is so disliked by the PC crowd because of the reb is doing so well!!! Go Rebels! (Except if they ever play The Golden Eagles again!)

Congrats, Rebels.

As a Tech fan who was at that game, let me say your team played a heck of a game, and your fans are intense. Well done.

I doubt it, the word from the hills is that he and his family are very happy. If he does go, so what? Schools lose coachs all the time, in three years Gus will be ready for a head coaching job and I would welcome him home.
