LACEY, Wash. Employees of a pizza delivery shop say the owners have cut off the heat in the store. And they say if the workers dont like it, they can leave.

Read the article and see what kind of total jerkbags the owners are. They don't deserve to own a business.
Evidently they don’t realize that it’s 2009 now, and programmable thermostats are the norm. This is why we end up with thousands of laws and regulations from OSHA & moronic city council resolutions.
Even 55 is too cold. Start delivering cold pizza and I’ll bet they start to care.
I suppose the market place will make that decision, like its supposed to.
I've had crappy bosses too. I found a different job.
They sound like jerks. Just buy an inexpensive programmable thermostat and program in the different temps for the different times of the day and night, and it becomes a non-issue.
There is something more to this. It is not just about the heat. The owner woman has a stick up her butt about something bigger than just the heat.
SCROOGE: Hey, hey, you there! Bob Cratchit! Come here! What are you doing
there?!
BOB CRATCHIT: I’m only putting a bit more coal in the fire, Mr. Scrooge,
seeing it’s so cold in there, sir.
SCROOGE: You put that coal back into the scuttle! A fire! A fire, indeed. I
can tell you, if you use coal at that rate, you and I will soon be parting
company, Bob Cratchit. You understand that? There’s many a young fella’d like
your situation, you know.
BOB CRATCHIT: I’m sorry, sir. My fingers were getting a little stiff with the
cold—
SCROOGE: Then put on your mittens.

From Orson Welles adaptation of A Christmas Carol (1939)
She’s a bean counter and has a heater.
The owners are jerkoffs. If I were an employee I’d tell the owners where to stuff their f***ing pizza dough....
She's a biotch....
A little taste of what’s to come when Dear Leader starts telling us to reduce our heating, lighting and AC for the benefit of the Climate and to reduce our oil and coal consumption. On the bright side...Dear Leaders National Civilian Corps Barracks will be nicely heated and cooled.
Pizza Time ...We serve the coldest pizza in town or it is free.
They might be better off talking to the labor board.
In addition, at around 20F, I would think frostbite on hands would be an issue. That could be one heck of a workman's comp claim... If an employee reported an on-the-job injury as a result of this, imagine what would happen to the owner's insurance premiums.
WA State Labor Board has already been asked by the reporter. No law exists stating what the temp is supposed to be, except maybe the law of common sense.
Which neither of the owners seem to have any of.
Bet the customers love the dining room.
“The beatings will continue until morale improves”.
I can’t remember where that phrase originated.
Guess its time to change that law. They probably didn't think any owners would be so nasty. Some businesses are just crappy that way. Not sure how bad the economy is there but the workers might have a hard time finding different jobs.
I think this is going to change soon.
That’s part of her mentality but there’s more behind this.
I would bet the business is not doing well and she is taking the stress out on the employee’s small screwup. And/or something has gone on there where she feels the employees don’t respect her enough and she’s being a hard ass to possibly get the ones she doesn’t like to get in line or quit. Her reaction is emotional to punish, not logical or financial, as getting a cheap programmable thermostat would solve the problem. A person who just wants to make sure the heat isn’t left on would just get a programmable thermostat and take the issue out of everyone’s hands, no more problem. She is ‘teaching them a lesson.’
There is more to it.

Say WA? Evergreen State ping
FReepmail sionnsar if you want on or off this ping list.
Ping sionnsar if you see a Washington state related thread.
Maybe they’ll start caring when their pipes freeze.

No, we don’t need laws regulating temp because most adjust to employee/customer comfort. That can’t be regulated. In Texas though, employers are responsible to provide an appropriate work environment. I read what the reporter typed but since they can’t safely work in a restuarant environment without coats etc then I bet OSHA could get the heat bumped up to a comfortable level.
OK, you’se delivery guys don’t like it?
Goes sits in your own delivery cars with the heat on, we’ll call you when its time for a delivery so your fat ass dosen’t get cold.
Total Bullsh!t!
Its hard to get out of paying wages. LLC’s provide limited separation from the individual and the corporation.
I’ve never seen a small business pocket mucho money from going out of business.

I read on another forum that the minimum wage in Washington State went up again and is now the highest in the nation. If this is true, then maybe the owners are trying to make up for increased labor costs without hitting the customers for more money.
“Egypt. 4500 years ago...”
LOL Thanks, now I remember.
Had a boss once that complained about the workers as she sat in her office, stuffing her face and watching soaps.
I have a much better situation now. When they are messing around they have the decency to leave the building.
They should go find another job.
I didn’t read the full article...didn’t have to.
The guy who owns the business has every right to turn the heat off if he wants to. The employees have the right to quit.
Not sure if there was some other back story to this saga, but it doesn’t seem like the boss is being anything other than a word that rhymes with “witch”. Sadly for some, that’s not illegal.
Something else that isn’t illegal is for the local public to order their pizza elsewhere and drive the franchise into closure or surrender. The henpecked husband also did the public a favor by mentioning the name of his wife’s (the boss in the center of this mess) accounting business: “accurate accounting.” Another opportunity for the public to vote with their feet.
Try it. I think you’ll find it difficult to find capital. Banks aren’t stupid and neither are most investors.
Time to call in to that owner, some (in the pizza delivery vernacular) “funny pizzas”.
That ought to get him a clue.
QB did the right thing IMO. If the peons don't like it, LEAVE!
Isn't what some here say about Radio? If you don't like it, don't listen?
/Hah
Except Barry won’t deign to don a sweater or set the WH at 68 degrees like Jimmah Carter. King Hussein and Queen ‘Chelle will be dressed in ermine as they tell the commoners to freeze for the benefit of the planet.
A friend gave me a cap with the inscription: The beatings will continue until crew morale improves"
My guess is it originated in the British Navy...circa 1700 or before. I wear the cap every time we leave the dock with a new crew member.
I think your overanalyzing. She's a first class....bad employer.
...read "bitzh" for "bad employer".
It’s not always possible to find another job these days.
Smart Olympia Pizza buyers by Brewery City Pizza anyway.
Pizza Time? Never heard of them. And I’ve lived here most of my life.
if it wasn't for Ford being such a scrooge we prolly wouldn't have unions today
That's not really what the article was about. It was mostly just an interesting story about what a jackass one employer is. Whether or not he had the right to be such was barely a footnote, but go ahead and defend him if you feel so obligated.
Beatings for even small infractions were common in 18th and 19th century military forces, including the US. I don’t know why they came about to the extent they did and when they abruptly stopped.
