Flat-screen TVs to face energy-efficiency rules in California
Los Angeles Times ^ | Jan. 3, 2009 | Marc Lifsher

Reporting from Sacramento -- That 52-inch, flat-screen television on the family room wall may have a terrific picture, but there's a big drawback: It's an energy hog.

State regulators are getting ready to curb the growing power gluttony of TV sets by drafting the nation's first rules requiring retailers to sell only the most energy-efficient models, starting in 2011.

Actually, if you’re not completely CLUELESS, there are different settings on the TV that change how much energy it ‘hogs.’ They set them super bright in the stores to lure you in. No one needs them ‘showroom bright’ at home. *SHRUG*

Television manufacturers should discontinue sales to CA then. Let Californians go back to watching this:

Actually, this article is misleading. Plasma TV's are power hogs, but LCD flat screens are more energy efficient than older Cathode Ray Tube type TV's. The reason they are reporting higher 'average' power consumption for LCD's is that the 'average' LCD TV purchased might be about 46", while the 'average' CRT TV purchased might be about 32".

Mike McMaster, president of Wilshire Entertainment Inc., worries that a rush to impose TV efficiency standards "would be basically the end of our business." His locations in Thousand Oaks and Valencia employ 54 people and specialize in sales and installation of custom home theater systems centered on extremely large TVs.

This is CA in a nutshell.

What’s wrong with allowing consumers to choose the most energy efficient models for themselves ? Or what if energy companies can generate whatever is demanded of them ? Why do we need f***ing bureaucrats telling us what we can or can’t use ?

Great, so the state of California wants to pick winners and losers in the panel wars. So much for the best technology winning or at least letting the consumer decide.....

Probably less than the computer you’re using right now, or less than the spare refrigerator in my basement circa 1960 that only has maybe half a dozen bottles of beer in it and nothing else.

You are on to something. The usual response to Communsim is the black market it creates, buy in cash from other black marketeers. Around here, workers are already asking “cash only”.

Set up your sources, don’t get coaught in the rush.

Cool TV. LOL. I remember my dad had one of the early remote control TVs, a Philco, back when I was growing up. Must have been a late 50’s model. Beautiful wooden cabinet. He had it hauled off just a couple years ago. Wish he’d kept it.

LCD -- liquid crystal display -- sets use 43% more electricity, on average, than conventional tube TVs

That cannot possibly be true. They must be comparing 42" LCDs with 21" tubes. CRT based TVs get hot (heat = energy). Full sized ones have big high voltage power supplies inside. Businesses that have gone from 17" CRT monitors to 17" LCD screens find their electric bills go down. (Similar technology from an energy usage standpoint).

Maybe it's the water.

".... the vast majority of them flat-panels. LCD -- liquid crystal display -- sets use 43% more electricity, on average, than conventional tube TVs; larger models use proportionately more. Plasma TVs, which command a relatively small share of the market, need more than three times as much power as bulky, old-style sets..."

From Tiger Direct Specifications on a 42 inch LCD TV

" Power Consumption: 300W"

42 inch Plasma Specifications

".. Power Consumption: 573W.."

Did the guy who wrote this article also write about global warming? I don't see 300 watts as a big deal. Even the 573 watts on the Plasma is not that bad. If there was a 42inch tube TV the power requirement might be less, but how much less. Also as time goes by it will get harder and harder to get tube tvs.

If there's an 800 pound electrified gorilla then that would be refrigeration/air conditioning. TVs are comparative spider monkeys.

Right! AND if you want ANY TV in the not too distant future it won’t be one with a Cathode Ray Tube. This is an area where the legislators will get their heads handed to them if they regulate too much.
