SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA - January 6, 2009 (SocalWeather.Org) Hurricane Force Santa Ana Winds Set To Pound Southern California

Growing concerns that damaging Santa Ana Winds are about to hit Southern California prompts a Santa Ana Wind Watch.
The Southern California Weather Authority has issued a Santa Ana Wind Watch effective this Friday until next week. The Santa Ana Wind pattern is upon us and we will most likely see damaging winds in the area. The weather authority issued a press release on January 4, 2009 that spoke of the event. Project UJEAS ES1 handled the event well and the "in the cards" system worked nicely again.
"Right now I am speaking with many people right now how to prepare for damaging winds. "said Kevin Martin, of the Southern California Weather Authority. "Estimations that hurricane force wind gusts is what we are going to be dealing with in the populated areas. We have not seen these speeds since October 2007 and they are certainly not uncommon. Still this is the type of event we need to warn ahead of time. We've issued the watch three days in advance, which should give tree growers and anyone needing to know the conditions coming up ample time to prepare.

No matter what, you fools stay in California. We’re all full.
I suggest a slight change”
Fools (e.g. dhimmicrats) and illegals can stay in CA, please.
The rest of you are welcome.
Note to libs (commonly devoid of logic): I didn’t say “Hispanics” stay, I said “illegals” stay. Get it?
Didn’t think so.
If you know a guy with the nickname “Torchy” you might want to keep an eye on him too...
Not me, I’m goin to my Unkus’s house.
Just show me to my room, and tell me what time supper is. I’ll try not to make too big a mess, and hardly ever demand to get to see my favorite TV shows when you are watching the big game!
Torchy could be a problem, but at least our mountainsd are covered with a deep layer of snow above about 4500 feet elevation.
Batten down your beebers full speed ahead we need a wind bailout just think the Palm Springs wind farm could go critical
“Hurricane” force?
SoCal gets big winds sometimes but if that’s a hurricane then it must be a real small one.
Sorry FReepers from CA. You are all welcome any time!
I stand corrected.
Bush’s fault.
Cheney’s fault.
Rove’s fault.
Blackwater’s fault.
YOU CHOOSE.
l.o.l.
We're even.
look that map. those winds are clearly coming straight from the melting polar ice cap.
Meaning 75 MPH.
It’s not just the winds... though its an amazing thing to live through, its how dry the air gets, brutal dry. The Fires that often go with all of the wind... A real Santa Ana Howler is an amazing thing to be in. Scary too.
I’ll need your address, and telephone number in case my GPS breaks down because of Bush.
You forgot Halliburton.
What a scary forecast! Wow it’s calm outside today!
I can find no verification for a santa ana wind condition in the near future at government websites such as the National Weather Service - here - http://www.weather.gov/.
*The Southern California Weather Authority* is not a government agency, nor a non-profit organization, but apparently is nothing more than the website of a blogger whose hobby is weather. The Ventura County Star newspaper apparently was also duped by this report - see here:
http://www.venturacountystar.com/news/2009/jan/05/strong-santa-ana-winds-are-becoming-likely-by/
Caveat emptor - buyer beware
He called the arctic blast that nailed Vegas and the Southwestern USA. I suggest you do not discredit him like that again got it? I know who he is and what he can do and he is WAY MORE ACCURATE than the National Weather Service. When these winds hit and do damage I will come here and say I told you so. Would you like me to invite him into this forum to tell you to can it and listen to him because he knows what he is talking about?
NOAA is a JOKE in Southern California. They screwed Christmas Eve up with 1-3 feet of snow and a snow warning in our mountains. Kevin has no snow warning, and snow levels above 7,500 feet. Guess what happened? KEVIN WAS RIGHT, AGAIN.
Get off the governments tail because the government cannot beat Kevin Martin in Southern California when it comes to weather.
I did no such thing to discredit anyone. I merely provided information that *The Southern California Weather Authority* is not a government agency as people would expect from its title.
If you can find third party verification of a weather forecast from other government or agency websites indicating a Santa Ana wind condition alert for this week, please post it on this website for everyone’s benefit. I checked the National Weather Service (NOAA) and could not find any high wind hazard alert.
Mr. Martin may be more accurate than God for all I know. But the title of his website is misleading and doesn’t help his credibility when his is the only website forecasting such weather conditions. It would be better if he titled his website “Kevin Martin’s Weather Forecasts” or something along that line so that we know the source. Are we not entitled to truth in advertising? Please invite Mr. Martin to defend his forecast in this forum so that we can all benefit. OK?
He’s known for his calls. I don’t care if he isn’t a government agency. Weather is a hobby and I love it as well. Some can get good at it like snowboarding and make it professional without schooling for it. Just PRACTICE.
Kevin is looked up to by many agencies including fire departments. They know of his calls. NOAA is late on this call. I will ask him to email me the next press release when the winds hit and post specifics on how fast the gusts were.
To the public, he is the SoCal Weather Authority because no one cares about the NWS here. I sure as hell don’t because they didn’t call the arctic blast that nailed the crap out of me. Kevin did. Therefore he has 1000% more credibility than NWS in my eyes and anyone that knew that.
The Southland Weather website shows the following as of Jan. 6, 2009 at 10:09 pm approx.
WINDS:
Locally breezy below passes and canyons of Santa Barbara
County this evening... diminishing overnight.
Light winds elsewhere.
No mention of Santa Ana condition forming. See here http://www.southlandwx.com/
The LA Times website weather map shows no *hurricane* advisory or high wind alert for Jan. 6, 2009 at approximately 10 pm. See here:
http://weather.latimes.com/severe.asp
The wind map at the LA Times website shows Southern California wind conditions at 2 to 4 mph for Jan. 6, 2009 around 10 pm. See here:
http://weather.latimes.com/US/Region/Southwest/2xpxWindSpeed.html
southlandwx is a joke site. It’s January 6, 2009. Kevin is calling for the winds starting FRIDAY.
NWS has a high wind watch out for my area. Kevin was right at SoCalWeather.Org in advance. This argument about his credibility was for nothing.
Yeah, that’s what I was thinking. Here come the fires again.
Yikes!
The Ventu Star wasnt duped...that is a blog post
I called the star. They say that Kevin Martin at SCWXA is very credible and so did KTLA Los Angeles.
This adds another point to Kevin’s credibility on the upcoming winds.
He is calling for 100mph winds Friday night....The NWS says 65...we will see who was right
NWS says 65 where? Kevin says hurricane force in populated zones and has said so in the press release I read. He says isolated 100 mph gusts in the passes and canyons (most likely Chilao or Freemont Canyon)
NWS said nothing when Kevin put it up. They already lost a point. Kevin was right. Ventura Star posted it as well due to how credible he is.
There is no competition anymore. Kevin called it. NWS did not. Just like his arctic blast.
I hope you put up a Vestas windmill to catch all that energy!
I did. Also here. This is where I found Mr. Martin. ScienceDude says he is credible as well. I started looking at his forecasts and noticed he is a step ahead of the NWS all the time. Here is the blog for interested.
Like I wrote, Kevin Martin may be better than God predicting weather. He just shouldn’t call what he does The So Cal Weather Authority which implies government authority. Anyone can tell me how many times they were right; it’s how honest they are about the times they were wrong that adds credibility.
What about this?
http://www.ocfa.org/
They call themselves authority. Just like the weather channel calling themselves the hurricane authority. It’s a saying of higher class.
You have to understand that NOAA or NWS is not the owner of the weather. Kevin may be far more accurate than them and that deserves respect regardless what he is called.
Come on, give us a break. “Authority” exclusively means government agency in this context. It surely isn’t religious authority or personal authority. You can’t grant yourself *authority.*
If Mr. Martin revealed his track record of where he failed then he would have credibility. If he and his friends just extoll his successes that is like a half truth. Fortune tellers and stock brokers can do that bad.
But it is a free marketplace and he is welcome to post his forecasts, which may or may not, be more accurate than the NOAA with its Doplar radar. He would do better to put his own name on it though, both for his own credit and for not misleading the public. I like the idea of an individual giving the government weather forecasters some competition.
The government does not control who can and cannot be credible. NWS is NOT credible in Southern California to me. My public decision. Kevin is.
