Passengers pounce on man who made threats aboard L.A.-bound flight
LA Times ^ | Jan. 8, 2008

Musician Chris Llewellyn was among those who sprang into action after a man shoved a flight attendant and tried to open an exit door. Chris Llewellyn was staring out the window of Delta Airlines Flight 110, watching the landscape of Los Angeles rise up toward the plane, when he heard the screams of a male flight attendant: "Help me! Help me!"

Turning quickly, he saw that a passenger had pushed the attendant to the floor and was trying to open the rear emergency exit.

Chris Llewellyn Video: Passengers take down man..."Don't come near me," the man warned. "I have a bomb. I have a bomb."

"I thought this guy was going to open the door. I was thinking, 'I'm not going to go down with the plane,' " said Llewellyn, 26, a 6-foot guitarist, who was flying into Los Angeles from Atlanta on Wednesday morning for a TV appearance with hip-hop artist Asher Roth.

Along with half a dozen other passengers, Llewellyn ran down the aisle into the galley area and jumped on the man, pulling him away from the door.

“”We all jumped him,” the guitarist said. “He was struggling hardcore. I was holding down his arm. Somebody had a foot on his head. Everyone was holding down a different body part. He was going nuts. I was telling him to chill because he’s not going anyplace.”

At that point, the plane was on the ground and a flight attendant had retrieved a restraining kit. From the ground the suspect asked, “What am I being charged with?”

Someone answered, “Assaulting a flight attendant.”

“He flipped out over that,” Llewellyn said. “Then they rolled him over and put the cuffs on him.”

The band was flying to Los Angeles to perform on Carson Daly’s late-night TV show.
Johnson is now being held pending psychological evaluation.”

Do we have a name yet for the perp? I noticed on news last night they avoided naming or even describing the perp.

This is a good example of why we will never suffer another 9/11 style attack using airliners.

Everybody that flies understands what to do, and the consequences of doing nothing.

The posted material's link says:

The Los Angeles Police Department identified the man as Lawrence Johnson, 45, of Kentucky. He was booked by airport police on suspicion of making a false bomb threat.

As per previous posts in this area: "sure sounds Amish (or Muslim?) to me" !

I was thinking, 'I'm not going to go down with the plane,'
9/11 showed us you don't have to be a hero, you just have to want to live. And the faster you get in motion to more likely that is. The new 'fear response' is not to sit like a rabbit anymore.

..and every case like this happens makes those who wish to do us harm think twice about boarding a plane.

Most Americans learned far too much from 9/11 to let the old “I have a bomb” line worry them. Most of the passengers taking part in wrestling with this nut were probably thinking where they would stick that bomb.

“Probably drunk, a mental case, or both.”

I say lock his sorry ass up for a minimum of 10 years, bread and water, hard labor, as an example to others.

(Not really expecting such logic to work with drunks or mental cases, however)

He said the suspect then asked, "What am I being charged with?" and someone answered, "Assaulting a flight attendant."

What about "Terroristic Threat?" He said he had a bomb.

It must really upset them too. I mean it use to be that shouting 'I have a bomb' got you fear, respect, and a nice buffer zone as people ran from you. Now they just push you down and kick you in the head.

I would hope that the ones that stopped the perp would see to it that the only way he could ever eat an apple again is with dentures.

It's highly unlikely that the suspect could have opened the emergency exit door. Because of cabin pressure, aviation experts have said it's impossible for someone to open an emergency exit when a plane is at high altitudes. But the Delta flight was almost on the ground, and one aviation expert said it may have been possible -- though unlikely -- for someone to have gotten the door open. At a low altitude, though, opening the door would not necessarily imperil passengers, the expert said.

What??? Passengers left their seats during landing? I hope all of them at least left their seat backs in the full upright position.

This was a test to see how the crew and passengers would react. Good job to all who subdued this man. By the way, is his ethnicity known? Does anyone want to bet against his being Middle Eastern?

I would have had my hand firmly planted around his trachea the second I had opportunity to do so. Squeeze first and ask questions later.

Ae you sure? If this is a picture taken inside the subject aircraft I would be more inclined the perp is the man in the middle. It doesn’t make sense that law enforcement would let the perp lead the way out. He would be sandwiched between them—handcuffed or not.

That’s just what the caption says. The two guys behind him seem to have police uniforms while said perp is wearing an ‘oakland’ sweatshirt. We may simply may not be seeing someone in front of him due to the camera angle or how far ahead he was.

I just looked again, he is between two police, the one in the front is just blurred because of movement. Camera phones are bad for that.

No, the guy with the Oakland sweatshirt. The blur is probably another police officer. Camera phones are bad at compensating for movement.
