AUSTRALIA'S surfing beaches will remain on high alert for shark attacks after two surfers were attacked on their surfboards in northern NSW and Tasmania.
A man was taken by helicopter to Gold Coast Hospital yesterday morning after being attacked at Fingal, while a 13-year-old girl was in a stable condition in Hobart Hospital last night after being mauled at Binalong Bay, about 250km north of Hobart.
Hannah Mighall was surfing with her 20-year-old cousin from Queensland at Binalong Bay, near St Helens, when a 5m white pointer latched on to her leg about 3.45pm yesterday.
The shark twice dragged the girl under the water before her cousin reached the scene on his surfboard and hit the animal, causing it to let go of the girl's leg.
The cousin managed to pull the teenager on to his surfboard and began to paddle towards the shore. But the shark followed and circled the frightened pair as they frantically paddled.
At one stage they caught a wave, but the shark was in the same wave, said police Senior Sergeant Jason Elmer, who arrived soon after the attack.
"They managed to get to shore. There's a significant bite out of the surfboard. I understand there was a fair bit of blood in the water," he said.
Sergeant Elmer said the teenager from Scamander, south of St Helens, emerged calmly from the water, despite the ordeal.
"She was really calm -- she was brave, probably in a little bit of shock. There were no tears," he said.
She was treated at St Helens Hospital before being flown to Hobart for further treatment.
Sergeant Elmer said the actions of the teenager's cousin had saved her. "He's done a magnificent job. He's extremely brave in his actions. He's probably saved her life," he said.

;o)
There was a Mako shark incident in New Zealand over the weekend. ‘Tis the season.
Sharks are magnificent animals. We aren’t usually on their menu, which is why it’s OK for us to go into the water... usually. When they do snack on us occasionally, that’s OK. The ocean is their livingroom, and we are home-invading.
And once there is blood in the water shark hell breaks loose.
I always swim with a sharkattack/font or a shark/fontsize=1.
