Group Sues Coke Over Vitaminwater Claims

Vitaminwater, which is marketed as a healthy drink, is nothing more than soda without the bubbles, according to a consumer group that has filed a lawsuit against maker Coca-Cola, claiming deceptive advertising practices.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest said that Coke's claims that the drinks can improve health are unsubstantiated.

CPSI said that the 33 grams of sugar in each bottle of Vitaminwater do more to promote obesity than any health benefits other ingredients might provide. It also said that the claims of help for the joints and bones cross the line into fraud.

Coca-Cola responded with a statement on its Web site that called the move ridiculous and ludicrous.

"Vitaminwater is a great tasting, hydrating beverage with essential vitamins and water, with labels showing calorie content," it said. The company also said the drink, like all its products, can be part of a healthy diet.

CSPI disagreed.

"Vitaminwater is Coke's attempt to dress up soda in a physician's white coat. Underneath, it's still sugar water, albeit sugar water that costs about ten bucks a gallon," said Steve Gardner, the group's director of litigation.

Michael F. Jacobson, the executive director, said people should get their vitamins from real food or inexpensive supplements.

these types of drinks including the energy drinks are the biggest FRAUDS out there. These companies are stealing dollars like it’s no tomorrow and they have the idiot Obama voters to thank. We are a nation of dolts and swindlers.

Wouldn’t it be nice if WE could sue these “groups” that are always making asses out of themselves with their lawsuits? Personally, I’m tired of all of them. Obama should force every one of them to either get jobs or go to jail.

I think $0.50 (aka fitty cent) had a stake in this juice... his take when Coca-Cola bought it was something along the line of $300 million+... I may be off a few million here and there.

I'm a KO stock holder and I just shake my head... that much coin for Kool Aide? Damn.

I guess the "brain trust" at KO (including Warren Buffett) did drink the Kool Aide.

Let’s see. Coke is selling Vitaminwater as a drink that has vitamins.

Whiny activist group is suing because, though it fulfills the claims Coke is making, on a totally unrelated note is has sugar in it.

What next? Offer a low-sodium version of a product and get sued because it still has the same amount of fat?

Outside of my morning coffee ...it used to be all I drank ... but when I finally read the label, I stopped buying it.

.99/bottle is pretty expensive.

So, you enjoyed it too. It’s expensive that true. When it’s on sale, I have one at work in the middle of my workday, addition to water. I don’t drink sodas (normally), so I guess in moderation, it’s not too bad. It’s a shame that the good tasting stuff has to be bad for us. Normally, I find alot of this kind of stuff a big scam, and this probably is as well - but, I pretty much buy it because it tastes good.
