WASHINGTON (AP) — In his final acts of clemency, President George W. Bush on Monday commuted the prison sentences of two former U.S. Border Patrol agents whose convictions for shooting a Mexican drug dealer ignited fierce debate about illegal immigration.

Bush's decision to commute the sentences of Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean, who tried to cover up the shooting, was welcomed by both Republican and Democratic members of Congress. They had long argued that the agents were merely doing their jobs, defending the American border against criminals. They also maintained that the more than 10-year prison sentences the pair was given were too harsh.

I’m doing the same dance I did when John McCain picked Sarah Palin.

Every once in a while, they do something not just right, but TOTALLY RIGHT!!

I guess a comuting of a sentence is not as good as a pardon, but welcome in deed!!

Wow, that is amazing, I had to be sure this wasn’t some kind of satire. I am happy for those gentlemen.

Finally!! I’m so happy for them, sorry they had to serve as long as they did. It’s not as if he pardoned FALN terrorists so his wife could get more votes.

While I am a believer that “Justice delayed is justice denied,” I am very well pleased that this reidculous blyte against our nation has ended. How do we ask law enforcement agents or military to put their lives on the line when we do this to them?

I don’t know, but the Federal prosecutor was Bush’s pick to go down there for this purpose. The fact that the case was prosecuted and that Bush “commuted” vs pardoned tells you something about Bush. I am an avid supporter of George Bush but he got it VERY wrong here... and a few other places... not near as bad as the MSM lied about.

Thank you, President Bush. I suppose better late than never.

God bless Ramos and Compean. Their prayers have been answered.

The pardon vs commute...I heard on the radio several days ago that the President could not pardon those two but could commute. Maybe someone with the knowledge of the law regarding these two issues could discuss this. I know one is forgive the conviction and the other finishes the sentences but the conviction stands...but why could the President not, by some law, pardon these two?

Fox News is saying that Bush saw what Libby said as being untruthful, therfore, saw him in a different light. I don’t know if this means he missed the bus on a pardon or commutation or not.

A pardon wipes his slate clean. A commutation says they served their sentences, still guilty, still on their record.
