Doctors prove that the Iceman was shot to death in the Alps [ Oetzi ]
Earth Times ^ | Wednesday, January 28, 2009 | DPA

Posted on 01/28/2009 7:00:56 PM PST by SunkenCiv

Doctors who studied the Iceman, a mummified Stone Age hunter found in Italy in 1991, announced conclusive proof Wednesday that he was shot to death with a flint-tipped arrow rather than dying of exposure as once thought. "He only lived for a short time after the arrow impact," said Andreas Nerlich, who headed a joint study by Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich and experts from Bolzano, Italy. Shortly before he was shot in the back, the Iceman suffered a non-lethal blow with a blunt object, possibly a stone from a slingshot, Nerlich's team said in a letter to the online journal Intensive Care Medicine... They said their findings, using new immunohistochemical techniques, of a fatal shot in the back supported the hypothesis that Oetzi was being chased at the time he was killed. The lesion from the blow was just below the arrow strike... A deep cut in the Iceman's hand, which has already been studied in the past, happened several days earlier, possibly in an accident with his flint knife. "In the space of a few days he had two injury sequences, which could possibly indicate two separate attacks on him," Nerlich said. Other scientists estimate Oetzi, who is now on display in the South Tyrol Archaeology Museum in Bolzano, died at age 46. His clothing and weapons offer a window into Stone Age lifestyles.

*sigh* They still want to believe that he was just a peaceful man who was ambushed while traveling.

Our Oetzi was a warrior.

Buried with a copper axe, shield, bow and broken arrows. The rest of his belongings were taken by his fellow warriors and they buried him in a ditch with his shield over him, and then covered him in snow to prevent scavengers from getting to his body.

The wound in his hand wasn’t an accident with a flint knife, it was a battle wound, as were the other injuries.

He was a warrior, and he died a violent death.

If it wasn't for global warming he might never have been found. Then we wouldn't have Civ entertaining us tonight with this delightful story. :-)

Time to ban flint-tipped arrows. ;~))

Seriously. I'm not much of a bleeding heart, but they have studied this poor guy up one side and down the other, and they still have him on display in some museum somewhere.

IMHO, we have learned all we can and it's time to give him a proper burial and let him rest in peace. I feel the same about all the old Egyptian and Inca mummies collecting dust in museums around the world. Yes, they may have had something to tell us, but it reaches a point where they simply become a Ripleys kind of spectacle.

Even though they are ancient, they were once living, breathing, intelligent humans and one of God's special creations. Their remains deserve to be treated with the kind of dignity we would accord to the recently departed and not as some curiosity or tourist attraction.

Just my humble opinion.

Ah, I remember the gotcha stories that our out of control warming thawed enough glacier to reveal a 5,000 year old body....

But doesn’t that mean it was fairly warm 5,000 years ago, compared to today’s temperatures. Maybe dinofarts were responsible.

He was a warrior, and he died a violent death.

War is as ancient as mankind. It was the special evolutionary pressure that drove the development of advanced intelligence far beyond the natural need to find food and shelter. The leftest idea that war can now be stamped is a dangerous fantasy.

Bill of rights number 2: the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed!

What is pretty interesting is our 2nd Amnedment came from those parts. The Framers modeled it after Switzerland - see William Tell etc. The Swiss has been able to own weapons since at least Tell’s time around 1307 AD.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Tell

Our snow warrior also buried not very far from the Beretta HQ. Beretta has been in existence since 1526 AD or 483 years! Their logo has arrows in it.

Hopefully SCOTUS will stand up for the Constitution before the usurper destroys it.

Last thing I remember is the freezing cold
Water reaching up just to swallow me whole
Ice in the rigging and howling wind
Shock to my body as we tumbled in
Then my brothers and the others are lost at sea
I alone am returned to tell thee
Hidden in ice for a century
To walk the world again
Lord have mercy on the frozen man

Next words that were spoken to me
Nurse asked me what my name might be
She was all in white at the foot of my bed
I said angel of mercy Im alive or am I dead
My name is william james mcphee
I was born in 1843
Raised in liverpool by the sea
But that aint who I am
Lord have mercy on the frozen man

It took a lot of money to start my heart
To peg my leg and to buy my eye
The newspapers call me the state of the art
And the children, when they see me, cry
I thought it would be nice just to visit my grave
See what kind of tombstone I might have
I saw my wife and my daughter and it seemed so strange
Both of them dead and gone from extreme old age
See here, when I die make sure Im gone
Dont leave em nothing to work on
You can raise your arm, you can wiggle your hand
And you can wave goodbye to the frozen man

I know what it means to freeze to death
To lose a little life with every breath
To say goodbye to life on earth
To come around again
Lord have mercy on the frozen man
Lord have mercy on the frozen man

-James Taylor

Well, not exactly. For fairly obvious reasons is was more closely modeled after the English Bill of Rights of 1689, which guaranteed the right of Protestants (only) to keep and bear arms. The US version just expanded it to cover all citizens.

We went to the museum last month and saw him, and yeah, I would have to probably agree. The one interesting thing, I guess is how his body was preserved, but I guess a picture could do that. The clothes and everything were interesting, but it just feels kind-of morbid. I do feel the same when I see mummies, too.
