It was brilliant chaos," but frightening, said Molly Hackman, a Pitt freshman from Lititz, Pa.
Within minutes of the game's thrilling conclusion, at least a thousand young people filled several blocks of Forbes in a march eastward through Oakland, ending in a swarm near Bigelow Boulevard.
Police summoned reinforcements because of the heavy crowd and incidents of vandalism. Some students carried street signs and a parking meter that had been broken.
Officers closed the Oakland side of the Birmingham Bridge at about 10:30 to prevent any of the crowd there from crossing the river to the South Side.
If anything, the throngs on East Carson Street were bigger but more orderly. Officers there formed a human barricade near South 26th Street, some of them on horseback and with police dogs, while fans nearby cheered and waved Terrible Towels while shouting "Here we go, Steelers!"
Fans popped open champagne bottles, wrapped their arms around one another and snapped photos in celebration. But soon after 11 p.m., the South Side was relatively quiet.
Seeming to speak for many revelers, Jonathan Warnock, 21, of the South Side, said while walking with his girlfriend: "It was a great game. Anybody who loves football had to have loved that game. It ended the right way."

So would I if I could find some. But this looks like you’re cursing the Steelers to burn in hell.
No, hell was when they played the Super Bowl with Neil O’Donnell at QB. ;-)
Yes, I remember that disaster. No one felt bad when they lost. I think we felt lucky to have scored at all. Ben is great. He made me fall in love with the team all over again.

Its official .. !
Sorry to break it to you, but I wouldn’t be bragging.
Worst officiated game since the last Steelers SB victory. NFL wants a Steelers victory, they get a Steelers victory.
Carter is the President, the Steelers are world champs. Next: Bell-bottomed jeans and DISCO!
Well, there is an old saying about opinions ... !
I already did that in the 70’s. I was pulling for the Cards, but it was a great game.
WOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
It’s a good day to be part of STEELER NATION!!!! That 4th quarter was amazing.
You said it! bttt
I would rather be part of the Steeler Nation then the Obamanation!!!!
F\if you all will excuse me. I’m going to go puke now.
:oP
Agreed. Harrison should have been thrown out of the game. The officiating spoilt the game for me. Hopefully this crew will not officiate at another SB.
I agree. The Stealers had better plan on sharing some of their game checks with the refs - they earned it. In a game with two ferocious defensive lines the Stealers get called for holding only once? Safety or not, that is Horse-pucky!
Thug Bowl.
Ahh... A Super Bowl Truther
HA HA HA YOU LOST
Well~What about that “Holding” penalty that gave the Cards 2PTS AND the Ball back? Without that “pro-Steeler” call= Game Over!I just love it when folks think the game was paid off.Let’s face it the Steelers should have been up 30+ to 7 & without the Ref’s The Steeler D would have only given up 14

You must have watched the game in HD - Holmgren Definition sometimes referred to as Hasselbeck vision. Get over it. The game was well-called.
You & me both!
Only one? - what game were you watching while we were watching the Super Bowl?

Have we met before?
Any other Steeler fans woried about Dan Rooney’s mental health?
“No, hell was when they played the Super Bowl with Neil ODonnell at QB. ;-)”
Boy, you nailed that one! 26 year old kid has two on his hand already.....amazing! Big Ben is living up to wearing number 7 as far as comeback’s.
Anyone notice Elway before the game? He looks like hell. Willie Namath looked better than John.
I am. I was shocked when Obambi was the first one he thanked......of all the fans and players, he thanked Obambi...feeble is all I can say!
Actually, 7 holding calls - 3 against the Steelers, 4 against the Cards.
I am willing to bet you can't find many people outside Pennslyvania who will agree with that.
You know, most of us around the country didn't have a hard rooting interest in the game one way or the other. Our teams had already been eliminated (or didn't even make the playoffs). I don't particularly care for either team. Like most, I just wanted to see a good, fair championship game. Good it may have been. Fair I am not too sure of.
My 75 year old mother even called at halftime, wanting to know if she was watching a replay of the Pittsburgh-Seattle superbowl three years earlier. Today, most people that I have talked to have expressed the exact same feelings, comparing the two games, or more accurately, comparing the officiating in both games. They also seem to wonder why both of these tainted games (the two worst tainted superbowls in anyone's recent memory) featured Pittsburgh victories after what may feel was extremely one-sided refereeing? Al Micheals had the most telling comment of the night on NBC when he said after one atrocious call, “And somewhere in the building Mike Holmgren is having flashbacks to another superbowl. But thats another story”. Truer words never spoken. The NFL needs to get on top of this before they become the new WWF.
The joke going around here today is that maybe next year Pittsburgh can win its fifth superbowl title. Most have the current all time tally at: Dallas 5, San Francisco 5, Pittsburgh 4, Referees 2.
Also, since you seem to be such a Pittsburgh fan, perhaps you can give us an inside scoop. Any truth to the rumor that next years official “Terrible Towel” will feature a picture of Obama on it?
It’s funny how people say it was poorly called but can’t seem to find many “bad” calls, plus ignore all the stuff that went against the Steelers.
The refs “favored” the Steelers by taking a TD off the board on the first possesion, calling a hold on them in the end zone and giving the Cards 2 points, and not calling intentional grounding on Warner’s overruled fumble (he was between the tackles and there were no receivers near where he threw it), and let’s not forget the great help the refs game them on the game winning drive with that first play holding call that turned it to 1st and 20. Yeah tons of “help” from the refs.
It’s not the refs’ or the Steelers’ were holding constantly. Heck the Cards should count themselves lucky since on at least 2 of the holding calls against them they were holding the facemask and the call should have been personal fouls for 15 yards not just holds for 10.
Were there iffy calls? Sure. The roughing the passer and the final fumble jump to mind immediately (of course that final fumble is a lot like the one that got over turned, if it was a pass it was intentional grounding, which involves a 10 second run off inside the two and would have ended the game). But there’s always iffy calls. Most of he calls that happened were legit. The Cards were holding a lot, and grabbing facemasks often.
Al’s comment was on Ben’s TD that got overturned. Similar event, opposite result.
What the hell do facts have to do with it?
The penalties on the Cards were just that - penalties. A guy runs over the holder what do want the ref to do - look the other way? The left tackle wraps his arm around Harrison like they have all year and you want them to not make a call?
The call on Hartwick in the endzone was nonsense - even Warren Sapp said so and he's a defensive lineman. Madden had very few complaints except for the hit by Harrison on the Card player. First, it was an open handed shot on a guy he's blocking. Second, if you think anybody is get tossed from a Super Bowl for anything less than a shot to the head or a closed fisted hit you're dreaming.
I don't care what you or your 75-year-old mom think unless one of you works for the NFL officiating team.
You can always argue calls but the three plays that were reviewed (the last fumble was reviewed according to Al Michaels - listen to the end of the game and you'll hear it) were bang-bang plays and the replay got it right and the Cards finished the game with a challange in hand. Everybody whines when the Steelers win. The Seahawks had their chances in XL but they held, they pushed off, they dropped passes, they missed kicks, they mismanaged the clock. Hey, if I were Holmgren I'd blame the refs too to take the heat off of me and my team for one of the sloppiest performances in SB history. The Steelers tried and tried to give the game away but the Hawks wouldn't take it. They have no one to blame but themselves.
As for Mr. Rooney's politics I don't really care who he voted for or endorsed. I don't follow the Steelers just because Rush supports them and I won't stop because Mr. Rooney made a mistake. I suspect that if you looked at the political beliefs and contributions of any NFL owner you wouldn't like what you see - start with Kraft in New England.
Sorry, I’m still celebrating Eli and the Giants’ win from last year. :)
That was the best game ever!
Actually, I didn’t lose anything. #32 sums up my position pretty well. I had no dog in this hunt; did not really care for either team. This SB was just an excuse to get some folk together and socialize while the game played on the 72” Sony in the background. We had a small pool going ($10 per square per quarter; I broke even) and generally just sipped Crown Royal and ate way too much chips and dip.
.
Now regarding the game ... when I was paying attention it seemed that when the refs called the penalties on the Cards, it seemed to be at a more critical moment for the Cards than the penalties on the Stealers. And since, as many have pointed out, the rules are broken in some way on just about every play, the refs get to decide when to throw the flags. That is game-deciding power any way you look at it. Again as #32 implies, it is way, way past time that the NFL gets the refs out of being a deciding part of the game outcome and back to being nearly invisible moderators. Basketball has this problem in an even greater way; too many refs think that the butts in the seats paid to see them. Narcissists!
.
Anyway, since it appears that you had a position favoring the Stealers, congratulations..
Most of the family is republican..He is really something..he does look bad..Art Jr is really running things..I feel bad for him!!
Me too.
So with under four minutes to go there's a holding call in the end zone that gives the Cards two points and the ball - that's not critical? Then on the first play of the game winning drive a positive play is called back to set up 1st and 20 and that's not critical? With friends like that who needs enemies?
Every hold that Gandy was called for on Harrison was a text book mugging. Except for the one where he got a 10-yard holding call but should have been hit with a 15-yard face mask.
Old news. In case you did not notice, the Giants were not in the Superbowl. The Steelers were...with that other team, what was their name?
I’ve been wondering where the “Steeeler Nation” term came from? All of a sudden there are all kinds of “Nations,” the “Steeler Nation,” the “facebook nation,” etc ... seems to have cropped up since all the publicity about the “Hokie Nation.”
It never gets old.....Best Superbowl Game Ever! Go Giants!
Wikipedia isn’t the most accurate reference to use, but they got this right. Steeler Nation has been around a while. :-)
