Police: Pet chimpanzee, Travis, attacks woman in Stamford

Escaped chimpanzee Travis is coaxed into a waiting sport utility vehicle in downtown Stamford, Conn. in 2003. A tame chimp was shot and killed by Stamford cops Monday after the ape badly mauled a friend of its owner. Witnesses said Travis, a normally docile 200-pound chimp, attacked a woman, forcing his owner to go after him with a butcher's knife.When cops drove up, the chimp tore off the cruiser's side mirror and tried to open the door.Police then shot and killed him, WABC-TV reported. The victim was said to be in critical condition. Travis, a 16-year-old who liked to drink wine, water the plants and watch baseball on TV, had a incident.

In October 2003, he escaped from an SUV driven by his owners, Jerry and Sandy Herrold, and commandeered a major intersection in Stamford, holding police at bay for several hours.

Cops arrived in a dozen cruisers but could not corral diaper-wearing Travis, who was capering in the middle of the street, occasionally rolling on his back and charging at officers.

No charges were filed in that case.

Travis also was a bit of a celebrity in his younger days. He reportedly appeared in TV commercials for Old Navy and Coca-Cola and did a stint on the "Maury Povich Show."

I remember J. Fred Muggs the cute little chimp on the original Today Show. Dave Garroway was the original host. I don't remember how long it was before the chimp was out of control but they did get rid of the "a nasty little monkey."

Then there's the couple who moved their chimp to an animal home (after their long-time pet bit off part of a woman's finger) and upon visiting their pet to celebrate its birthday..
