Being that I live in NYC, would I be able to go to a Brooklyn gun shop, see if the guy would do the transfer for me, then if he agrees, I’d be able to get a C&R firearm without having to register it as a golf club?

Let me tell you mine..

In 1988 I was one hell of a gun trader. By some luck, I ran onto a then brand new Ruger P-85 9mm pistol. This was the “IT” pistol back in the day. I took mine with me on a road trip to Texas to see my dad.
We went to a gun show in Grapevine, and I ran into a man with a bunch of guns. His best one was the one I’d always wanted..a Series 70 Colt Lightweight Commander in 45 ACP.

I told the guy Id trade him the ruger for it..I was just joking and didnt think he’d bite, but he did. I took his number and planned to get with him and make the trade..I mean..the LW Commander is the perfect concealed carry gun for the Jeff Cooper devotee like me.

But for some reason I chickened out and didnt follow through. It wasn’t till later that I REALLY realized how much more the commander was worth.

I schedule time every day to kick my own ass for doing that.

I dunno about NYC, but a transfer to a shop owner with an 01 FFL (federal firarms lisence) is legal. The 01 FFL guy does the paperwork (background check), charges you $15 or $20 and hands you the weapon. NYC and kalifornia might be a problem

No problem. Lots of info here on C&R rifles and pistols and getting the license (I did not get the lisence because I dunno if I can keep the paperwork right that the feds want and I don’t like the provision where the feds can inspect the paperwork by appointment).

You never know. Sometimes it pays to be cautious (chicken) when a gun trade seems almost too good to be true. I don’t know how carefully you inspected that Commander, but I do know that it’s easy to be seduced by a pretty face without looking to see behind the makeup. Perhaps your instincts were taking good care of you. I share your admiration for Col. Cooper, and miss him as well. Interestingly, I also used to live in Grapevine.

In over 20 some years of trading guns,Ive never run across another series 70 LW commander in 45 that was even remotely affordable.

thats the holy grail gun for me.

And as for the col...well...I drove through paulden once and went on gunsite property..I stopped at the pro shop to buy a tee shirt.,..when I came out guess who was sitting in the driveway on his 3 wheeler but the col. himself.

He had a scout rifle in a boot type case on the trike and was carrying an old beat up looking 1911 in a yaqui slide.

I gushed over him a bit and he was very nice..he told me I needed to dump my Kimber though because it had plastic parts.

That was one of the best days of my life..

I would loved to have met Jeff Cooper. He and Skeeter Skelton have always been my favorite gun writers. There was an NRA convention in Seattle about 20 years ago and I went there with one of his books to get it signed, but when I went to the booth he was involved with he had gone for the day. I have on a few occaisions sent him letters commenting on things he had written, and every single time I did he sent me a reply.

I have to disagree with his opinion of your Kimber. If it's like my Pro Carry II (the Commander pattern), the only plastic is the mainspring housing, and it's easily replaced. I did it with mine because I've developed a preference for the arched housing rather than the flat one, rather than the fact that it was plastic. It's been a pretty solid shooter. Moreover, with apologies to the Col., there's more than a little plastic on my Steyr Scout.

I love the concept of the steyr scout, but heres my main problem with it and feel free to correct me if Im wrong.

I was led to believe that the barrel is a part of the receiver. By that I mean if you shoot out the bbl, it cannot be replaced, thus the whole gun is toast.

I cant afford the steyr anyway. I did well to manage my new M4 style rifle.

The barrel attaches to the reciever with an extension housing and locking ring. They can be replacecd. The reciever is a slightly modified Steyr SBS (Safe Bolt System) used in their Pro-Hunter series. The rifle is superbly accurate and enjoyable to shoot. It wasn't a commercial success however, and you're not kidding about expensive. I bought the 10 rd. kit, and I also removed the Scout Scope and use a Leupold VX-3 (QD rings allow me to quickly change one for the other, and the zero holds remarkably close).

My favorite military pattern is the M-1A, and I also enjoy the old M-1 Garand. I shoot the Garand and a really sweet Smith Corona 03-A3 in local CMP matches. If I had to own one rifle (shudder), it would be the 03-A3. That rifle seems to like me as much as I like it. I manage to pass for a good shot with it from time to time, and it's 30-06 cartridge does just about everything.
