How to add and remove background color of text, in Word

I am looking, in Word 2002, at a document that has several words and letters "highlighted." The color of all the text, including the highlighted text, is black. The document looks the same regardless of whether I am in final-showing-markup or final. Tracking is disabled.

The "highlighted" text is red. It looks as though someone "Selected" the text (which normally would turn the text background black, and the text white, of course), then did something to turn that background red. The text itself remains black.

This feature is nice, and I'd like to be able to use it. More importantly, it's kind of distracting, so I'd like to remove it. I know I can go in and manually retype the text, but that's a pain. How was this background color created? Thanks. I've checked help and google, to no avail.

It sounds like it might be shaded. That option is under Format, Borders and Shading.

If it’s not the shaded background, check “Format Character” and look at the colors. In OpenOffice, it’s on the “Background” tab. I think on Word, it’s on a the first tab you get in “Format Character.” It’s in there somewhere. It’s been a while since I used M$ Word, sorry.

Maybe it’s highlighted. Check on your formatting toolbar for a text that has a colorblock through it.

The hightlighting tool is next to the text color tool on the formatting toolbar. Make sure you always have the formatting and standard toolbars up at the top of your document at all times Go to View—>Toolbars—>
Make sure the top two are checked (Standard and Formatting)
This will keep your toolbars visible for you at all times.

How to get rid of black background in Microsoft Word.
Situation: You went to a website, you highlighted all the text on a page on that website, you copied and pasted the words to a Microsoft Word document, and now you have the words but the background is black. You want to get rid of the black background behind the words and make the background white like you’d normally see in a Word document.

1. Click ‘Home’.
2. Click ‘Select all’ (is is on the far right). Everything should now be highlighted.
3. Under the ‘Home’ tab, look for a big letter ‘A’, then a little letter ‘A’, then an icon button that has a big and little letter ‘A’ (Aa) and a white thingy that looks like an eraser from elementary school. Click that (’Clear Formatting’) and it should get rid of the black background.
