Amazing you should say that; I have one, and the damned thing will drive tacks, with open sights, no less.

A semi auto is good for what, exactly?

If you have plenty of ready to go extra mags you can have lots of fun with it a very short time period, especially if you learn to bump shoot it.

Putting a lot of holes in something faster than a bolt-action rifle.

My thoughts exactly, plus you get to pick and choose which manufacture and quality of each part you want.

I friend of mine bought me a Mosin Nagant as a Christmas gift. It shoots great and is very accurate, but it does have a hell of a kick.

"I'd be hauling my M1A Supermatch to the party with all 2,000 rds of the Federal Gold 168grBTHP Match ammo I have and the dozen or so 20rd mags, along with my sidearm and the five loaded mags I keep handy for that. That's my grab. The wife grabs the CAR15, mags and ammo and her sidearm."

It appears beyond question, sir, that both you and your wife are well regulated.

“The Garand took 30-06 I thought. Is the ammo for the M-1 common or atypical?”

The decision was made to mass produce the M1 for .30-06. This was in large part to faciltate the transition from the Springfield ‘03 and also probably because an influential (and competent) General wanted a kick-ass load.
The .30-06 is common although several other similar calibers have been used.
From time to time, the CMP sells GI .30-06 and I am not sure there is a limit on what an individual is allowed to buy.
It is certainly more expensive than .22, but then you are irreplaceable.

Here we go again. The anti-Bill Ruger types are out bashing the Mini....

Not so. I had an early Mini 14 and it jammed with anything but FMJ. It sounds like the problem has been solved in the newer versions. I love my 10/22s and my Mark II pistol.

The picture and price in my post are linked to http://www.aimsurplus.com/acatalog/Russian_Model_91_30_7_62x54R_Mosin_Nagant.html. These rifles are quite common but if you can't find one locally you can have a local federally licensed firearms dealer (check your phone book under "Gun Shops") order one for you from the link above for a fee.

The M-1 Carbine is neither high powered, nor particularly cheap, but I would be interested in Freeper opinion as to the M-1 in a role of a fun/easy to shoot collector rifle with a serviceability potential. How widely available is the .30 ammo, for example?

A Mosin-Nagant 1891/30 the ammo is less $

I purchase my first Mosin this past weekend. It's a 1942 91/30 made in the Izhevsk factory. It cost $100 out the door with accessories.

I also picked up two spam cans of surplus ammo. It's got copper washed steel case, steel core light ball, FMJ made in Bulgaria 440 rounds per can. I paid $160 out the door for both, including the can opened for the spam cans.

Check out 7.62x54r.net for anything and everything you need to know about Mosin Nagants.
