"My country has let me down." That's the assessment of an Arizona rancher who was sued by six illegal immigrants he detained on his property and turned over to the Border Patrol in 2004.
On Tuesday an eight-member federal jury in Tucson threw out the claim brought by the six illegal aliens that Roger Barnett violated their civil rights when he detained them at gunpoint on his ranch nearly five years ago. The panel also ruled against the plaintiffs' claims of battery and false imprisonment.
But the jury did find Barnett liable on four claims of assault and four claims of emotional distress, ordering him to pay $77,804 in damages, $60,000 of which were punitive.

Exactomundo. Barnett has single-handedly done more to help secure the southern border than the entire U.S. gov't. He highlights their incompetence. ...and their longterm goals (to integrate the U.S. and Mexico).

Speaking of support, do you know if there's a group to which we can send donations to cover legal costs? The group that sued him obviously has people donating to it.
He is just finding out that the American Federal and State governments will harm him? Hell, the two governments have favored the criminal element of our society since at least the Warren court. The number of decisions criminal and tort where the court favors the wrong doer is staggering. Indeed, if one thinks about it the comparative fault concept, by definition, allows a wrongdoer to sue and collect.

Rancher ruling adds to border debate
...Glenn Spencer, president of the American Border Patrol, a private organization that uses high-tech equipment to highlight what it calls the “crisis of illegal immigration,” said he worked with Mr. Barnett for more than 10 years and knew he had been “very careful when dealing with the illegal trespassers.”
A resident of Sierra Vista, Ariz., Mr. Spencer called the lawsuit “a malicious prosecution,” but said it had shed light on the fact that the federal government has failed to protect the nation’s borders.
“I was in Washington, D.C., 10 years ago when Roger Barnett submitted testimony to a congressional committee describing the terrible situation on the border,” Mr. Spencer said. “Now, 10 years later, Roger is sued by open-borders activists, while at the same time the federal government is constructing a vehicle barrier along the border south of his ranch and lying to the public by saying it is a fence.
“Roger Barnett is a hero and a victim - a victim of a duplicitous government that has no intention of protecting the border with Mexico,” he said.

Should send a copy to his Senators (oh... Juan McCain?), Representatives, President Obama, and the Border Patrol. Also send a bill for his expenses in arming himself and his time having to patrol his own land. While the government throws away $Trillions to bail out irresponsible lenders, borrowers, thieves, fools, and political supporters, one of the primary CONSTITUTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES of the Federal Government - to protect the Borders from invaders - goes unfulfilled. Send GW a copy of the bill too, as this all happened on his watch.
There was an article somewhere yesterday, Barnetts attorney said the judge incorrectly instructed the jury about awards. According to a voter approved change to the Arizona constitution, illegals cannot claim punitive damages, so Barnetts attorney is going to the supreme court to overturn the $78k damages awarded by the jury
No good deed goes unpunished.
Time to tell the government to piss up a rope.
