Kate Winslet wins best actress Oscar

British actress Kate Winslet won her first Oscar on Sunday for her portrayal of a German woman with a secret Nazi past in the romantic drama "The Reader." "Titanic" star Winslet, 33, was Oscar-nominated five times in the past 13 years but had always returned home empty-handed. Her best actress Oscar joins two Golden Globes, a Screen Actors Guild award, a British BAFTA and a handful of U.S. critics awards that Winslet has won this season. "To the academy thank you so much. My God," she said. In addition to her acclaimed turn in "The Reader," she won plaudits for her performance as a disillusioned housewife in "Revolutionary Road." The two films were released only weeks apart. Winslet has said that portraying Hanna Schmitz, a former Nazi prison guard who embarks on an affair with a teen-age boy more than a decade later, was the most challenging role she had ever played because she had little in her own life to draw on. "Just getting underneath the skin of such a complex person who had lived such an isolated life for so many different reasons, it was hard and quite lonely at times," she told Reuters in a recent interview.

How dare she not starve herself for the red carpet walk!?

I here it’s well-known that the starlets make a beeline for the local McDonald’s the minute the ceremony’s over.

As for that, there was long a joke going round that Kate had a “nudity” clause in her contract to the effect that she would NOT take a role that DIDN’T have her doffing her duds.

That’s what I’d call a “sweep” alright.

I saw it and loved it. In one of his essays on film, author Larry McMurtry (”Lonesome Dove”, “Hud”, “The Last Picture Show”) commented that we Americans are suckers for a good underdog story.

"A somewhat “classic” style beauty, but she is not aging well."

Red wine and Bourbon age well. Not twits.

Your being snurdly fer sure.

If I was going out to a post Oscar party I would taste all the free goodies at party time.

Who the heck would want Mc Donalds ...there is a good time and place for the Mac...like after a week long flu and a need to hook up on some sodium/potassium.

Ever been so sick and on a week long clear liqued diet...even post surg...a Quarter Pounder Mc D with Cheese and a Choc. Milkshake.

Ultimate to weak to cook comfort food. (with handy crapper in site)

Kate stood out and was the family fave.

Other than her we had no clue what the heck the Movies were.

We love Documetaries but the description a the Academy of those docs being Truth uh no Doc are the truth only through the eyes of the person who produces that Doc...it is in these days just an opine of ones reality.

Fun stuff for a night and I guess we may see some of these movies ect on cable in the next two years.

LOL Hey how come no slots for best doggie/kitty movie.. Marley and Me must have not lived up to the book.

We will still catch it for a fun flick on cable down the road.

I was afraid Winslet was going to become the cinematic equivalent of Susan Lucci: getting nominated many times, but never winning. 'Bout time. And her being so un-emaciated, y'know....

Sense and Sensibility (1995)

Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress (Kate Winslet, nominee); BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Kate Winslet, winner); Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress - Motion Picture (Kate Winslet, nominee); Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role (Kate Winslet, winner); Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress - Motion Picture (Kate Winslet, nominee)

I saw a show about 'The Reader' on satellite. They made the beautiful Miss Winslet look plain. And she has an affair with a goofy looking boy. It's not for me. But I like Sense and Sensibility. I bought it.
