I am sorry to post a vanity. I wanted to look through Computers area but had some trouble finding it. I have a 3 year or or so eMachines desktop with XP. I have other machines but this is an at home mule. I went on a trip, came back and my cable for DSL had been knocked down by a truck. I had the phone company come out to restring it.

Do you plan to do the changes?
Thanks. I recall years ago a few eMachines doing amazing things serving things up 24x7. Doing things they were never designed to do when the quality was even worse.
I am wary of buying a Dell again after Michael Dell hooked up with Soros, Flowers and John Paulson to buy Indy Mac after Soros, Flowers and Paulson shorted it into the ground with the help of Schumer.
I have bought Dell’s before but they are on my do not buy list now. I would probably but HP.
Thanks for the tips. I think I may go with a new machine and put the old drive in an enclosure to work as an external to access old stuff.
If the capacitors or MB are fried I may just pull the HD out. Trying to remove a MB looks to be a bear.
That's easy if you want to use the old hard drive as a slave. But if you want to use it as the boot drive, that takes some effort, but it can be done. You'll need to run a Windows repair install, reinstall the chipset drivers and then apply all the Windows updates. If you decide to go that route, Google "windows repair install" to get directions on how to do it safely.
It looks like a bear, but it's actually pretty easy. You do it from the bottom after disconnecting things.
Let me know if the problem is blown capacitors.

I have a friend who owns a computer repair business. He swears by Dells. He's not political.
I haven't bought a Dell in years, but my friend pointed me to a Dell website where refurbished Dells can be bought very inexpensively (<$350 for a dual-core with a large hard drive). Next time I need a another desktop that's probably where I'll go.

Ok, stupid question I know, but did you actually check your surge suppressor and the power strip for circuit breakers and reset them before turning on the computer? Are you actually getting power to the computer is what I am asking. PS do go out but I would check those things first.

Heck, trucks don’t even come down my road anymore... go figure. ;>)

Just had a customer whose PS took the mobo with it. The PC make? Emachines of course!
I was able to back up their data but it’s new computer time for them!
Thanks - always a good thing to check. Yes I plugged things into the strip and then plugged the PC into the wall too. Always good to check.
Dell’s are a dream to open up and take apart. HP’s are a pain. Dell hooking up with Soros is too much for me.

Anyone use Sprint wireless? I heard they had a cheap wireless bundle deal for your phone and PC. I am payting AT&T about $49.99 for cell svcs and $20 for the DSL but when you add taxes it is probably $100 a month.
I have no idea what Sprint’s deal is but if I got cell a decent DSL wireless for 460 or something then it might be worth it.
You can keep the files but you have to reinstall Windows.

FR is one of the most important resources we have — as important as Rush, or Hannity, IMHO. The question ask, if you Google it, is answered on many, many, sites. FR must pay for the bandwidth with our contributions, so this is a no brainer to me.
Old machine has XP.
The plan will probably be:
1. Buy a new machine probably with Vista Home.
2. Take old HD (drive) out of old eMachines put in an enclosure that has a USB plug about $25??? (is this how to do it?)
3. Plug in USB into new machine to access old programs and files on the old hard drive????
Does this make sense? Can I run the old programs?
