Sounds like a good idea.

I keep a lot of spices on hand, and then I can mix n match a lot of meals. In hard times I used to make a lot of cornbread and hamburger soup.

Hamburger Soup
It is an easy fix using same size of 1 can of mixed veggies, and 1 can of diced tomatoes, a can of water or chicken broth, saute 1 sm diced onion, 1 tblspn chopped garlic(opt) with 1/2 -1 lb ground beef (your taste) in frying pan until done, drain and add to soup pot with veggies, broth and diced tomatoes. Now I cheat and keep in my refrigerator a jar of chopped garlic...so a tbspn here or there is easy. I use pinches of cumin seed, dry basil and crushed rosemary to soups and with salt and pepper to taste (some like 1/4 tsp hot pepper flakes too) it tastes great.

We make a basic cornbread...simple:
Heat oven to 400 degrees
In bowl mix:
2 c. self rising cornmeal, sifted
1/2 c. self rising flour, sifted
1/3-1/2 tspn salt to taste
3/4 c. buttermilk
add some tap water (1/4 c?) to get to a cake mix consistency....pour in well oiled pan...prefer canola oil.
Bake 40 min to 1 hr until very brown...test with toothpick

Now, with chili, soup or beans you have a great bread....cheap...without a bunch of additives.

Yep. Growing up poor was a good thing; made me thankful for what I did have - and more so all the time. A lot of “stuff” is just redundant anyway.

Sad that us common folk are discussing how to make cheap food while we fork over our hard earned dollars so the O’Dictators can live it up and eat $100.00 a lb steak.

Damn! I suspected something like this.

I wonder if the Reverend Wright is in on this activity too??

I make a big breakfast for the family every few weeks and this is great scrambled egg bake...I found it online and adapted less milk and salt somewhat to make it better, but you can divide in half using square pan...this one feeds 8-10 people.
OVEN SCRAMBLED EGGS
Heat oven to 350 degrees
Use 9X13 inch baking pan or oven dish, and melt in it 1/2 cup butter first, then
In very large pan or bowl whisk together 24 (2 doz) eggs and 1 1/2 - 2 tsp salt (your taste), then add slowly while whisking 2 cups milk ...pour into the melted butter and bake in oven 15 minutes, stir then continue baking approxiametly another 15-20 minutes for firmer fluffy scrambled egg bake...or until center is done. Mine was getting slightly browned on outside edges when center was done.

Great for a crowd pleaser...serve with bacon or sausage, grits or hashbrowns, bisquits or toast and enjoy. I use precooked packs of bacon and warm in oven...it makes life easier.

Here are some links for some copycat recipes, from restaurants. You can find Cracker Barrels hashbrown casserole, KFC's Original or Extra Crisy, Olive Gardens Zuppa Tuscana, Red Lobsters Cheddar Bay Biscuits and others.

Just because you have to eat cheap doesn't mean you can't eat good.

Cracker Barrel uses chuck roast for there pot roast. Generally inexpensive. When the store has it for $2ish a lb.(about once a month) I'll buy 2-3. You can put it in a crock pot for the day, with some onions, maybe some potatoes and carrots. Mmmmmmm. Makes good left overs too.

I buy russet potatoes on sale about once a month also, usually $2 for a 10# bag.

Pot roast and potatoes for 2 for about $2.50, maybe some left overs.

One of my favorite meals. Sliced boiled potatoes with 1 lb of fried ground beef with a little onion and a can of cream of mushroom soup. Another dish for about $2.50-$3 for 2 people. There is NEVER any leftovers with this.

Or 1 lb bag of egg noodles, 1 lb ground beef fried, 1 can cream of mush soup.

I buy by whats on sale, not what I feel hungry for. I find the best sales around the major holidays, and plan accordingly, and stock up.

CDKitchen.com

RecipeLink.com

Recipezaar.com

Also do a scroogle.org search of "crock pot recipes". The internet is an awesome tool. :)

I avoid Walmart whenever possible. I shop Meijer 90% of the time. I hardly ever shop at Jewel or Dominicks.

I've learned some of their sale patterns, and plan accordingly.

How do you beat a Dynamo detergent sale of buy 1 get 2 free at $12.99?

I feel like a Meijer groupy.

You shop like I do, it’s what’s on sale even when I can afford whatever. We have a Go grocery that has better meats than some other places, and the bread deals are great.
I add lots of soups to casseroles, crock pot meals etc.

SAUSAGE AND RICE CASSEROLE
1 lb sausage pkg (I prefer hot)
1/2 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp pepper
saute until done with 1 chopped onion, drain
add to 3-4 cups cooked rice with 1 can CREAM OF CELERY SOUP
(1 1/2 c dry rice= 3 c. cooked rice)
Put in 6-8 cup casserole dish, sprinkle with either cheddar, mozzarella or cojack cheese bake until cheese melts...great stuff.

Serve with salad or green beans, it’s excellent.

Though I agree 1000% with you, I find more contentment avoiding what others do, and pay attention to what I do. I can’t do anything about “Ears”, but I find great satisfaction shopping for the best deals I can and eating the best I can for as reasonable as possible.

The closer a secret is kept, the more powerful the impact once it is finally revealed.

Such is the case with author and activist J.L. King’s intriguing look at the lives and lifestyles of black men who sleep with other men but do not consider themselves to be gay. These men live “on the down low,” the “DL” for short, and their sexual activities have gained significant notice as the rate of HIV/AIDS infection in black women has skyrocketed, with the vast majority of cases coming from heterosexual sex.

King is a veteran of the DL himself and his book serves partly as a social and psychological survey of the other men he has surveyed and partly as highly candid memoir.

King was well regarded in his community, popular at his church, successful in his career, and married to a woman who had no idea that his secret life existed. But when she caught him in a lie and with another man, the marriage collapsed and King’s long and painful path to self-awareness began.

King cites the negative image many socially conservative black men have of homosexuality as an obstacle to those men being honest with their partners and themselves about who they are.

Among the more intriguing elements of On the Down Low are the peculiar approaches men on the DL have to the sexual act, seeking a strictly physical sexual relationship with their secret male partners while remaining in more traditional arrangements with women.

Whether this discrepancy is a product of scrupulously guarded secrecy and shame or the natural preference of an understudied sexual identity is one of the numerous questions raised by this book.

Though the infection statistics make the DL a huge public health issue, King is neither a sociologist nor a medical professional. And while a more clinical look at this issue would be welcome, King accomplished what he set out to do:

provide light and insight into a world that so many have worked so hard to keep in the shadows. —John Moe

They make a great whole wheat egg noodle now, and I love to take my Sam’s Club $4.95 roasted chicken carcass with leftover meat (hold back meat pcs), and make broth- drain out bones and strain, add good meat pieces and cook 1/2 bag of those noodles with it...with 1/4 tsp dry basil, rosemary, cumin and some garlic..great homemade soup.

I do look online for recipes and I found this Quiche recipe that’s great...but I modified it too.
Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
SPINACH MUSHROOM QUICHE
5 large eggs
1 cup milk
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
1 sm can sliced mushroom pcs
1 15-16 oz can spinach..drained very well (press out all water)
Use whisk to beat eggs and then add all other ingredients.
Pour into a baked, frozen pie shell and bake for 20 minutes, then add 2-3 cups of shredded Mozzarella cheese and bake another 35-40 minutes until brown on top. Remove and let cool for at least 15 min before cutting...good cold too.

On the Quiche I forgot to mention that I crumble a few pcs of cooked bacon on the top before adding the mozzarella cheese..it’s precooked bacon so after the first cook period is fine before the cheese.

Back at Christmas time, Meijer had Tomato, Chx Noodle, Crm O Mush, Crm O Chx, soups on sale for $.60 a can. I walked out with flats (24 cans), especially the cream soups, they're a staple for me.

Oh yeah, I had a few coupons for 10 or 15 cents off per can for 5 to 8 cans each coupon.

Its nice knowing I can go to the pantry and get just about whatever I need to make a good meal.

Now I'll save up until the next sale.

I eat better now than I ever did buying off sales.

Thnx for the recipe.
