A video showing a King County Sheriff's deputy pummeling a 15-year-old girl in a holding cell was released Friday over the strenuous objections of the officer's attorney.
The case goes beyond police misconduct, County Prosecutor Dan Satterberg said in a prepared statement.
"It's about criminal misconduct. And that's why he needs to be prosecuted," he said.
The video of the Nov. 29 incident was disclosed Friday, one day after Deputy Paul Schene, 31, pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor assault in King County District Court.
Schene, an eight-year veteran, works out of Precinct 4, which covers SeaTac, Burien and high crime areas in White Center and Skyway.
He is the third sheriff's deputy since 2006 to face charges on allegations of excessive force. All three are from the Burien precinct.
A detective assigned to the girl's case discovered the video Dec. 1 and immediately forwarded it to supervisors.

I hope he no longer wears a badge after this. He's clearly dangerous.
he has had some other serious events in the past also.
What about the other officer? He certainly didn't try to stop him.
good point.
“What about the other officer? He certainly didn’t try to stop him. “
Wondered about that but it appears he’s saying something and he doesn’t join in. He’s probably not sure whats going on and trying to make sure the prisoner is secure.
Then again, he didn’t report the incident. Just another case of how cops protect each other at our expense.
The other officer didn’t really have time to react. You’ll notice from the video that he did bring up his arm I assume to warn off the assaulting officer after he had punched the girl in the head twice.
Yep, that was clearly not necessary and over the line.
On the bright side, I bet she has a lot more respect for her elders.
Picking her up by her hair is extra special isn’t it.
“On the bright side, I bet she has a lot more respect for her elders.”
Yeah, the kinda respect the Jews had for the Nazi’s in the Warsaw Ghetto.
Its called fear.
The other officer was supposedly a trainee. He was probably thinking to himself "what the heck am I supposed to do"
Really? She’ll hate and mistrust the cops for the rest of her life because of this — just as millions of others do.
I think people that steal cars and kick their shoes at Police already hate them. The guy should be fired, but this was no Angel.
I would say more fear and little respect.
She took her mom’s car without permission. Not the smartest thing to do, but on the other hand, it’s something a lot of kids have done at one point or another growing up. They (we) just don’t always get caught.
When my little brother was mistakenly pulled from his car at the market and taken to the station, a group of cops beat him so badly in front of the rest of the office, that one young cop called my mother to tell her that she needed to get him to a hospital and that he would testify if she wanted him to.
Maybe you should have read the article more carefully. The car was her parent’s. Apparently the girl and her friend went out joy riding and her parents were not aware that she had taken it and reported it stolen. Hardly the mark of a seasoned criminal. The shoe itself wasn’t really being kicked with any force. It was clearly more the act of a petulant child in a sulk than attempted assault with a shoe.
Security bureaucrat stressed out by 15 year old twat.
We should really have them do less challenging tasks, like pulling over taxpaying pluggers for burnt tail lights, crime fighting stuff like that.
When that Iraqi threw a shoe at the President, he didn’t get as much beat down.
Of course, I have not seen a video yet where a cop doesn’t beat the restrained. This added pummeling must be something they teach.
so how did the rest of the story turn out? did the guy testify against his brother officers?
Crime doesn't pay..... Traffic violators do!
A twat? Really?
Where would a kid be going at 3:30 in the morning as a passenger in her mom’s car?
Takes a real hero to take on a 15 year-old girl with nothing but a gun, another cop for back-up and no more than 75 pounds on her. This guy is so brave.
Out with a boyfriend most likely. I’m not excusing what she did, and obviously she shouldn’t have been out at that hour *and* in her mother’s car. But having snuck out of my parents house several times when I was 15 (I just climbed out the window though and went over the neighbor’s) I know it happens. My former coworker, now in her late 50s, used to laugh about how she and her sister would climb out and back in via the porch roof, go ‘cruising’ around town and never got caught.
“Where would a kid be going at 3:30 in the morning as a passenger in her moms car?”
Thats between her and her parents. Breaking curfew isn’t cause for a beat down in my book. Heck if the parents did this they would be jailed.
“This guy is so brave.”
Yep, he’s a true hero! She coulda killed someone ya know.
“so how did the rest of the story turn out? did the guy testify against his brother officers?”
I can ask my brother but that stuff was so common in Houston then, we may have let it go.
I was standing in the air conditioned open office at police headquarters once, watching my two handcuffed friends being beaten in full view of everyone, including secretaries, the beating was by detectives in suits.
One detective walked by carrying papers and delivered a kick as he calmly passed.
Those were the days when someone would be taken from a holding cell to the rubber room and be brought back badly beaten and barely conscious while the other people in the holding cell tried to nurse him back. It was probably worse for people that had been convicted of crimes.
For those that went to jail ward from the holding tank they could be turned over to the inmate jail enforcers that would take it as far as the jailers would let them, including rape
Arresting her is fine, putting her in the cell is fine. A bit overkill but they didn’t know she was the daughter of the owners.
Giving her an attitude adjustment would even be ok, a verbal one.
Beating her is criminal.
“A twat? Really?”
yes obviously she’s a scumbag, otherwise why would the police be beating the crap out of her?
LOL. You forgot the sarcasm tag.
98 percent of the time I am on the side of the officer in things like this, but after seeing it several times on our local Western Washington news, there is no way I could say this was justified.
Totally agree with ya!
Lose his badge? Any man that bets the crap out of a 15 year old girl should be in jail for 20 years, getting rape by in prison. It is no wonder people think police have mental problems. Big tuff guy beats up a 15 year old girl.
Real tough guy there...what a prick
But she will be wealthy while doing so. I say she gets a cool million out of this if not more.
In the news, have you noticed so many Florida cops with a "doctor's prescription" for steroids?
That's news to me and I almost hope it's true. I'd rather think it was something in their chemistry than something in their character.
I agree with ya, but taking the badge of guys like this seems optimistic these days. Actually putting them in prison is too much to hope for.
Didn’t think I needed the sarcasm tag, perhaps I should’ve made it a bit more over the top.
>>>I hope he no longer wears a badge after this. He’s clearly dangerous.
You demonstrate why it was so wrong for the video to be released. The jury pool is hopelessly tainted now. He’s convicted before the trial. When he is convicted his odds on appeal are excellent. It would have been better for everybody but the television news ratings if the evidence had been given first to the trial jury.
Steroids were "doctor-prescribed", so it's OK. /s

Over recent decades, parental responsibilities have evolved over to the policeregrettably.
Sometimes the only "correction" ever seen is confrontation with the arresting cop (even in stolen-car cases). A judge isn't going to mete out any justice in this casefrustrating enforcement of our laws.
Without enforcement, there are no Laws.
PC will kill us.
“You demonstrate why it was so wrong for the video to be released. The jury pool is hopelessly tainted now. “
Only because his lawyer would seek to get this video eliminated as evidence.
It sucks when the light of day hits police depts and their efforts to cover this stuff up.
“Sometimes the only “correction” ever seen is confrontation with the arresting cop (even in stolen-car cases).”
Sometimes maybe, most of the time parents take care of this stuff. Its time to stop making policy based on the lowest common denominator.
“Without enforcement, there are no Laws.”
His beating of this 15 year old is not enforcement, its criminal assault.
“PC will kill us.”
Not as fast as the govt will. Refusing to accept criminal behavior like this from the police is not PC.
Misdemeanor assault? Gimmie a damned break!
Why is it a "hate crime" if someone does a beatdown on a minority or a queer who "assaults" them in a way far more serious than what this girl did to the cop? Then it is a federal crime.
But, when a cop beats down a citizen (who is a minor, and in custody) under the color of his authority, he is charged with a "misdemeanor".
THAT is what is criminal!
What I was a kid, parents took care of stuff: It isn't today. Parents try to intimidate both police and school administrators.
"...His beating of this 15 year old is not enforcement, its criminal assault..."
I didn't see the video, but the descriptions that follow shows she did a bit of a "token assault" herself, triggering the über-response.
You wouldn't believe how frustrating police work is. Officers are second-guessed, assaulted by criminals, remain unsupported by the brass, then the city gets sued by trial lawyers for more of our money.
“Parents try to intimidate both police and school administrators.”
Yeah thats a shame, public servants being ‘intimidated’ by a soccer mom.
“I didn’t see the video, but the descriptions that follow shows she did a bit of a “token assault” herself, triggering the über-response. “
She flicked her shoes off at him. Hardly worth the beating. A beating which would have been a felony if any non-cop had administered it.
“You wouldn’t believe how frustrating police work is”
You’ve made your bed, now sleep in it. I could care less.
"...Youve made your bed, now sleep in it. I could care less..."
I'm very lucky not to have done any hands-on law enforcement, but I did watch it firsthand for 30 years. Citizens could watch, too, should they arrange to take a "citizen-ride" with law enforcement officers.
Our troops being weakened during wartime endangers us no less than the relentless attacks on the thin blue line of homeland enforcement.
“I’m very lucky not to have done any hands-on law enforcement, but I did watch it firsthand for 30 years. Citizens could watch, too, should they arrange to take a “citizen-ride” with law enforcement officers.”
Sorry if my ‘make your bed’ comment was over the top, I didn’t mean it to be. I object to the militarization of the police and the move away from the peace officer and protect and serve attitude. Its more about dominate and suppress now.
If I kneecapped you would you still respect me in the morning?
