DS9 was far and away the best of the series.

I’m just hoping the movie script wasn’t written by someone who never saw Star Trek.

The last movie was bad.

The last couple of TV series were bad.

It might be time for “the Negotiator.”

"That portrayed by Star Trek and that portrayed by Mad Max. I am afraid we are headed towards Thunderdome faster than Star Fleet."

According to the "Star Trek canon", the Star Trek universe got it's start during a "Thunderdome" period, which was brought to a close when Zefrem Cochran's "wildcat" invention of "warp drive" led to a "galactic contact" by the Vulcans.

actually my understanding is that the decisionmakers at Paramount waited for the contract with Brandon and Braga to expire in order to bring in new blood.

J.J. Abrams is the one responsible for this.

Keep in mind, they have been redoing the special effects of the original serices via CGI.

The only way to save the franchise is to get far away from the PC stuff. (PS tiny spoiler, but Lenard Nimoy is supposedly appearing in this one. If you know what happened in the episode “Yesteryear” in the animated series...Seleck(sp?) makes an appearance.)

IOW the same Kirk who read the “We the People...” with passion as words with meaning, or the Uhura who explained the natives of the planet were worshiping the “Son of God” not the “sun”, or the crew that kills off Landreu, or the holds that liberty for all is a voice for the individual and not some collectivist BS then we will be on the right track.

On the other hand if they go prodeviant and fully collectivist nuclear holocost and french wus socialist, then no amount of snazzy special effects will save it. (seriously some fan based internet productions, per sheppard smith [figure out why he would report that one] are portraying some relative of kirks as a homosexual in the future)

Wasn’t there an episode where the creature fed on fear. And they finally got rid of it by getting everyone to laugh.

Within some paramters, I agree with your comments.  In the movies the scoundrel is played off as being a misfit their whole lives.  You don't see them attending college and knuckling down to obtain a degree.

What you see is them stealing, pulling all sorts of shady deals, and then taking over to lead a group with no self-discipline or education to make that possible.

Here's the part you left out of your comments.

Dwight D. Eisenhower - U.S. Military Academy - West Point
Ulyssis S. Grant - U.S. Military Academny - West Point
George Patton -
U.S. Military Academy, a master's degree in international affairs from George Washington University and the Senior Managers in Government Program at Harvard University.
Bull Halsey - The U.S. Naval Academy - Also studied at the Naval War College in the mid 1930s
Curtis E. Lemay -
Ohio State University where he studied civil engineering and was a member of the National Society of Pershing Rifles
Bernard Montgomery - Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst
Nathan Bedford Forest III - U.S. Military Academy - West Point

I agree with you insofar as the Ferrengi comparison.

But I’ll be darker in my comparison: Borg. A slave to the collective via his programming...

“DS9 was far and away the best of the series.”

Any credibility you may have accumulated in your 10 years on FR, has been vaporized.

Right on with the assessment. Hollywood can’t shed it’s appetite for computer generated F/X. They lost the recipe when it comes to dialogue and plot...

All very true, but you have to make it through the educational process to earn the right to be a rebel.

I wonder how they are going to handle the Koubayashi Maru test that cannon has kirk manipulating into a win in a no win test.

As I recall he was supposed to have reprogrammed the computer so that his ‘win’ could be achieved. That story line never played well with me. If Sulu or some other individual had done it, it would seem more realistic. I don’t see Kirk as much of a computer nerd.

I enjoyed the Star Trek series of television shows and movies. That doesn’t mean that I agree with the unified Federation theory, sort of an homage to the United Nations model of governance.

Start Trek also promoted the no (or very few) personal belongings model too.

At one time the original series took great care to promote the non-intervention model as a highly ethical stance, then passed off Kirk as a guy who was admired for his unethical approach to the Koubayashi Maru test. It’s kind of an interesting contrast in values.

I suspect it is not that it took special computer savvy to reprogram the computer, but rather the will and guts to actually do it, and exactly what to do to make it work, and then not get caught.

who said he actually did it? he could have gotten someone to do it for him.

After seeing what average kids can do with computers these days, I could buy it.

My understanding of the cannon was that he was praised for refusing to accept defeat. A very important trait for someone who is out on his own with no back up “out there.”

You don’t want a commander who just accepts defeat at every phart of a frenchman.

>can we at least agree that Voyager IS the worst?<

IMO, The Next Generation was the worst.

I thought Voyager had possibilities, but the writers and producers couldn't break themselves from TNG twaddle.

Enterprise got bogged down with its time travel stuff.

DS9, I never got around to watching much of it. When it originally ran, I had little in the way of over air TV reception. By the time it hit satellite, I just couldn't get interested.

But I occasionally will try to watch a TNG rerun. I just start groaning and start surfing the remote...

“can we at least agree that Voyager IS the worst?”

Of the spinoff series I would rank TNG the best by far. Voyager and Enterprise tied for a very distant second and DS9 the worst.
