mine has a removable A-3 handle/sight the front is fixed...will I need a scope riser when in flat top configuration?
I'd like a mount that is quickly detatachable and hold zero when reattached.
My eyes are not what they were so I am looking for a combo that has a built in BDC for shooting at 250-500 yards with a .223 55 gr.
Anyone have experience with Shepard scopes ?

Have you thought about Eotech?
Try a holographic sight with a 4x magnifier. You can do long range and switch to close quarters quickly.

I would think you would need a scope w/ a riser mount. Check out Larue Tactical or Yankee Hill Machine - either one should have what you’re looking for.
EOTECH
It depends on what you get for a scope. With a Trijicon ACOG 4x, for example, you use a standard mount but if it is 3x or lower I think you use a higher mount. Check with the company you get the scope from.
Want to check back later. I’m in the market for a solution also.
I have the same A3 handle . I’ll share a response I recieved fro BUSHMASTER concerning the mounts .
Hello,
The ARMS # 2 http://www.bushmaster.com/products.asp?cat=20 , the aluminum http://www.bushmaster.com/products.asp?cat=20&zoom_highlight=RAY%2D002 and Kwik-Site http://www.bushmaster.com/products.asp?cat=20&zoom_highlight=KSN%2DM16 are see through carry handle mounts.
Subject: A3 upper & scope installation
If you mount a 3X or higher power scope on an A3 flat top upper with the full front sight base the scopes depth of field will blur out the front sight base and it will not be seen by the shooter. It is recommended that you use a scope base such as an A.R.M.S. # 5 Multibase or B.M.A.S. Quick Detach Rail Mount for easy on and off while retaining zero as well as setting the scope up for eye relief.
With the scope mount base use Medium rings for a scope with a 40mm objective lens. Use High rings for a scope with a 50mm objective lens.
Generally Low scope rings have a 1/4” rise and are 7/8” from the bottom of the mount to the centerline of the scope. Medium scope rings have a 1/2” rise and are 1-1/8” to the centerline of the scope. High scope rings have a 3/4” rise and are 1-3/8” to the centerline of the scope. Scope mount bases and risers have a 1/2” rise.
Trijicon ACOG TAO1NSN sight and the Trijicon Reflex sight mounted directly to the receiver will clear the front sight. EO Tech reflex sights will co witness with iron sights if a B.M.A.S. rear flip up sight is installed.
Scope ring manufactures have not standardized dimensions for Low, Medium or High rings. One manufacturers rise or distance to scope centerline may be different than another manufacturers. Attached are the scope ring heights that we carry.
Thank you,
Jim Eden

Another notch higher in quality (and price), you'll find the Burris XTR-14.
The threads I mentioned show these scopes mounted on flattops with standard front sight bodies, using a variety of mounts. I'm partial to the LaRue Tactical products, myself.
The combo of red dot and separate 3x magnifier is pretty nice. So is the ACOG 4x with integral BUIS.
YMMV
Those things cost as much as the rifle does these days.

thanks
Yep. But worth every penny, IMHO.
Oh well. Maybe when the USMC gets all their orders the price on them will come down.
I had been saving for like 3 years for my dream AR. When O’Bummer got elected I thought I’d better convert cash to gear FAST. So I had the money.
What did you end up buying?
And it all packs up nicely into this 26" bag. The scope goes into the side bag
which is padded and has a separate compartment for two armor plates,
and three magazine holders. It's made by Tac Force.
The plate holders are valuable if you're under fire, um, from those pesky deer,
you can flip open the case and us it as cover while assembling the, um, (hrrmph) "Hunting" rifle.
Have you thought about removing the original front sight - gas block and replacing it with a flat top gas block? They’re NOT difficult to remove, and some AR-15 front sight assemblies are even secured using allen screws so you don’t have to grind and punch out the pins...but rather simply unscrew them. A flat topped gas block would solve the “300 yard blur” that you’re likely to encounter with that front sight in the line of sight of a scope. If raise the scope it will change the way that you position your head on the rifle while shooting. It “can” make a good cheek weld impossible.
I opted for the Rock River CAR-A2 myself. Put an adjustable stock, swapped out the barrel for the Wilson heavy, and topped it off with the aforementioned Aimpoint.
Other than that I didn't do much.
Put all the rest of my budget into mags and ammo. Picked up a few thousand rounds of Mil-Spec green tip from Ammoman about 2 years ago when it was cheap and available.
Hell, the ammo turns out to be a better investment than my Stock Index Funds!
I paid north of $2.2k. Scary to spend that kind of loot, but the first time I took it to the range I know I did the right thing.
But, jeesh, aint' nothing to complain about with a RRA CAR, huh?
Nope. I paid less than a grand for mine about 15 months ago before the insanity and laid enough green tip to last me a while, depending.
I paid 189 bucks a thousand for it, delivered.
I've seen prices as high as 350 a thousand, when you can get it, fairly recently. If I were in a selling kind of mood I might make a pretty fair profit.
Now it's components, including lots of 62 grain soft points so I can reload all that beautiful LC brass when the time comes.
Enjoy your rifle. A well built AR is a sweet shooter.
Mine looks real nice next to the National Match M1A.
Best,
L
mine are pinned.
from their site:
This item from EOTech has been discontinued and no longer available.
I’ll look around there more later.
thanks
I forgot to mention...you would have to unscrew the flash hider as well...which can be trouble without the right tools.
ping to research your post on scopes...
How serious are you about shooting at 500 yard targets? How long is your barrel? You're going to need a seriously good scope for that. You really want to hang a big ol' scope on your AR?
