Apple unveils all-new itsy-bitsy 3G iPod shuffle; world’s smallest music player now talks to you

Wednesday, March 11, 2009 - 08:38 AM EST

Apple today introduced the all-new iPod shuffle, the world's smallest music player at nearly half of the size of the previous model, and the first music player that talks to you. The revolutionary new VoiceOver feature enables iPod shuffle to speak your song titles, artists and playlist names. The third generation iPod shuffle is significantly smaller than a single AA battery, holds up to 1,000 songs and is easier to use with all of the controls conveniently located on the earphone cord. With the press of a button, you can play, pause, adjust volume, switch playlists and hear the name of the song and artist. iPod shuffle features a sleek new aluminum design with a built-in stainless steel clip that makes it extremely wearable.

"Imagine your music player talking to you, telling you your song titles, artists and playlist names," said Greg Joswiak, Apple's vice president of iPod and iPhone Product Marketing, in the press release. "The amazingly small new iPod shuffle takes a revolutionary approach to how you listen to your music by talking to you, also making it the first iPod shuffle with playlists."

iPod shuffle is based on Apple's popular shuffle feature, which randomly selects songs from your music library. And now, when you can't remember the name of a song or an artist playing, with the press of a button iPod shuffle tells you the name of the song and artist. iPod shuffle can even tell you status information, such as battery life. With the ability to hold up to 1,000 songs and the VoiceOver feature, you can now easily switch between multiple playlists on your iPod shuffle. iPod shuffle can speak 14 languages including English, Czech, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish and Turkish.

The new iPod shuffle comes in silver or black and features a sleek wearable design with a built-in stainless steel clip. iPod shuffle is the smallest music player in the world and is incredibly easy to clip to almost anything and take with you everywhere you go. iPod shuffle features up to 10 hours of battery life.

Size and weight • Height: 1.8 inches (45.2 mm) • Width: 0.7 inch (17.5 mm) • Depth: 0.3 inch (7.8 mm) including clip • True volume: 0.26 cu inches (4,326 cu mm) • Weight: 0.38 ounce (10.7 grams)

Audio support: • AAC (16 to 320 Kbps) • Protected AAC • MP3 (16 to 320 Kbps) • MP3 VBR • Audible (formats 2, 3, and 4) • Apple Lossless • WAV • AIFF

Pretty cool, especially for the $79 price.

So what about people who can’t wear those headphones? How are they supposed to change songs etc?

What about the new iPod Pico? At about the size of a grain of rice, it’s too small to have a headphone jack, so it beams the music directly into your brain.

I couldn’t find in the article what the storage space was. “Up to 1,000 songs” means nothing to me.

I see Apple is getting closer to it's ultimate goal, which is to build an implantable device which will turn weak minded people into mindless slaves. These mindless slaves will lose all common sense and will buy everything that Apple develops without regard to price while taking orders from Steve Jobs. These mindless slaves will also go forth and shout the Apple message while defending Apple and Steve Jobs from criticism.
OH WAIT! They have had this for years now.

Maybe it’s just me, but I would rather see what song I’m picking and not wait for some robotic communicator to tell it to me. 1,000 songs are a lot to go through to find the one you want.

Plus, I would never pay $79 for that little thing, when you can get a decent MP3 player with a screen for $40. (Just bought one for my husband).

I have a hand-me-down 30GB iPod. I waited for my brother to get bored with his and go buy the Touch before I purchased anything from Apple. I don’t even use iTunes. they aren’t getting any of my money.

I'm gonna take a shot in the dark here and say that the title of the thread indicates that this thing has 3 gig of storage.
But that's just a guess on my part.

4GB. Pretty amazing how small it is for that amount of memory.

Do they also have an implantable device to put into others that turns them into mindless drones to hate everything Apple does? They have had those for years as well.

Silly me,
I was going on the sign at my local Sam’s club advertising the 30 GIG IPOD as “30G IPOD”.
Oh well, I didn’t buy that one and probably won’t buy this one either.

Finally! I haven't had any direction in my life since the neighbor's dog died.

Okay, Mr. Fierro, I'll admit it — I'm addicted to iPods and iPhones! :-)
