PHOENIX - A well-known New York pastor claims he has been compelled by the Holy Spirit to send out an urgent message about an imminent and "earth shattering calamity."

David Wilkerson told readers of his blog on Saturday that the calamity would be centered in New England, and then spread across the country, and around the world, part of what he sees as judgment from God, NewsChannel5 sister station KNXV-TV reported.

"An earth-shattering calamity is about to happen," he wrote. "It is going to be so frightening, we are all going to tremble -- even the godliest among us." . . .

I know of some people locally (Mormons) who always have a years supply of food on hand. Our country would not handle a crisis well. We freaked out at the gas shortage last year. I hope this pastor is just trying to get attention but I trust him more than a politician.

“I hope this pastor is just trying to get attention...”

Unfortunately he is not.

An earth trembling calamity from New England? Is Ted Kennedy going to collapse?

Yeah, it happened on January 20 in the Washington DC area...

Well, could it happen today? Then I wouldn’t have to get the final cookie sale reports and payment in.

“Something is going to happen.”

“What is going to happen?”

“Something wonderful.”

"I was led in a practical way to lay aside a month's supply of food -- because I have witnessed the panic in the wake of terrorism," he wrote.

I took the first step and bought a weekend's supply of beer!

I predict many earth shattering calamities in our future.

At some point, a volcano will erupt.
At some point, an asteroid will hit us.
At some point, there will be a tsunami.
At some point, the sun will burn up the earth as it expands from dying.

Where’s my TV show and book deal?

Dec. 2012 is coming. I have had a morbid fascination with that date since several ancient societies predict something big to happen then, exactly what is a bit unclear.

But, as for predictions like this, I don’t take them seriously.

Every month somebody online is detailing some vision of a major disaster.

It never actually happens.

Wilkerson, you just had a bad dream. It’s not a prophecy. I guarantee it.

Is this the guy who said God told him to make sandwiches and 2 days later 9/11 happened and he had some 2000 sandwiches ready?

Not big on modern prophets but you never know.

You are absolutely correct. Americans have not had to endure real hardship in quite a while. I don't think most people realize that it really wouldn't take a lot to upset the balance.

Well, I’ve had great respect for Wilkerson in the past, but when he ventures into Pat Robertson territory, he loses me.

On further reading, if it happened in New England, I’d still have to do the cookie reports here in the South. A catastrophe would at least be a break from the quotidian anxieties and harassments.

When I was in college in the mid-80s, we had a goofball student who sat on the lawn (on nice days ;-) with a sign about the imminent nuclear holocaust. It didn’t happen - we had to pay the rent every month, final exams came around, and eventually, we had to get jobs.
