“While other Roman writers of the time , such as Cicero, Suetonius, Lucan, Tacitus and Pliny the Elder, described human sacrifice among the Celts, only Caesar mentions the wicker man as one of many ways the Druids of Gaul performed sacrifices.[3] Not having witnessed the ritual himself, Caesar reports that some of the Gauls built the effigies out of sticks and placed living men inside, then set them on fire to pay tribute to the gods. Caesar writes that though the Druids generally used thieves and criminals, as they pleased the gods more, they sometimes used innocent men when no delinquents could be found.
While some modern authors like Barry Cunliffe, author of The Ancient Celts are convinced that the Druids practiced human sacrifice[4], others dispute Caesar’s accounts as repeating a sensationalistic rumor as propaganda to encourage his supporters back home. By the first century AD, human sacrifice “was a thing of the past” among the Celts.[5]
One medieval commentary, the 10th century Commenta Bernensia, states that men were burned in a wooden manikin in sacrifice to Taranis.”

If people only brought snacks to meetings things like that would never happen. I can imagine that the ceremonies ran late and many didn't have dinner reservations at the inn. By then it was too late to call them in.
They were not against human sacrifice but they reserved it for times of great need.
This was one of the reasons they were appalled at Carthage.
Killing slaves was one thing. Killing your own children as a homage to your god was quite another.
The Romans didn’t have that many limits. Ask the Christians who were used as torches at garden parties, or were wrapped in fresh animal skins and fed to hungry lions and bears, or the thousands crucified with spikes through their hands and feet. Or the gladiator shows. The Romans were hideously cruel.
You are looking at it through modern eyes. The Romans did not believe in equality or the humanity of those that they considered their inferiors. Most of those who were martyred were either slaves or plebs. They were fair game according the universal rules of the time.
The article starts hot and heavy with cannalbilism but then the rest of the article seems to pretty much deny it.

Caesar of course being one of the all time great respectors of human life.
There was no such remake. It was just a horrible nightmare/bad drug trip you must have had.

Actually last week Aust TV ran the two versions back to back. Verdict Worst. Remake. Ever.
Despite Cage being in the right, and against a mob of moonbat feminists, he was such a jerkass about it (dude, did you just kick Joan of Arc in the face?) that burning to death was what he deserved. That he was a wimpering coward about it was the cherry on the top.
Whereas, Woodward's character looked a bit of a prig, and the happy hedonistic pagans were so reasonable about their beliefs that you were on their side until it came clear to where those beliefs had led. And Sgt Howie's death, crowning moment of awesome: that is how a man dies.

I don’t know if it is fair to say that Roman society was really all that much more bloodthursty than we are.
We are not quite up to the Romans yet, but recent events seem to indicate that we are about up to the later 2nd century BC, and are in a galloping hurry to reach the first century BC.
It's said that by the time Caesar was finished in Gaul he left one million dead, another million enslaved and the remaining million paralyzed by shock and horror, all in a war for his own personal aggrandizement.
Human sacrifice and ritual cannibalism was widely spread if not widely practiced in all of human history.
The Greeks, those paragons of rationalism, had sacrifice in their cultural DNA before their golden age.
Jehovah’s testing of Abraham before letting him off the hook with a ram may have marked a change-over in the cultural practices of the ancient Jews.
If what they were doing repelled the Romans, it was probably pretty savage.
I doubt that there was any need to “justify” imperialist actions by Caesar as long as he was wining and bringing back lott and plunder.
