Help! Virus has the best of me. And is exposing my kids to constant penis enlargement ads.

Posted on 03/21/2009 7:08:22 AM PDT by Minn

The laptop in the house, which is currently the only computer in the house, has a bad virus/trojan/dropper that seems to have me beat. All clicks on Google are redirected to phony yellow pages. Most banner ads on normal sites are replaced with ads for a penis enlargement product (as if I need that). All communication with McAfee or attempts to download, update or reinstall McAfee fail. McAffe's instructions for disabling the virus by messing with IP address flushing do no good.

I'm hesitant to completly start over on this computer. It's an HP OEM machine that didn't come with a Windows disk, just a recovery partition. So I'm not even sure a restore from the partition will do any good, since who really knows what those do. I've searched all over for suspicious processes and registry start up settings without luck. Any ideas?

sounds to me like you have an adware/spyware problem..you can use AVG and SuperSpyWare to run on your PC which should take care of the problem..(I use them and have had no problems with that stuff)..

I can send you the .exe for both if you’d like..Freepmail me with an e-mail address to send them..

I had the same problem about a week ago. I upgraded my Norton to 2009, ran a full scan and it took care of it, finally.

I’m deluged with spam advertising “penis enlargement”. The weird part is that I don’t have one of those appendages. And I don’t visit porn sites either.

I had a similar problem, a friend of mine (computer guru) came over, messed with the computer for about 1 1/2 hours then realized a site had downloaded spyware. He went to the spyware website and just clicked on remove spyware. I don’t know if I am oversimplifying...take it for what it’s worth. Good luck!

Go to the following link and download the Combofix.exe:

http://www.myantispyware.com/2007/10/08/combofix-another-free-anti-spyware-tool/

It's a free download. It will ask you to either Run or Save the executable. Click Save and save it to the desktop on your laptop. A blue command prompt screen will appear and it will ask you to install the Windows Recovery Console. Click Yes on that too. It looks like you have a Trojan Virus and ComboFix will remove all Trojan viruses and spyware that is currently running in the background. I had a similar problem on my laptop and it fixed it. You will notice when the ComboFix is being ran that your system time will turn into military time for about 5-10 minutes.

If only these devices or snake oil actually worked! One has to wonder how they get by putting this stuff on the air and over the internet since it is such blatant lies. It they worked, half the male population would buying this stuff so much the factories would be working overtime just to keep up with the demand. It would probably break the recession by putting so much money into the economy. Maybe you should send this onto “Tiny Tim” Geithner so he can “stimulate” the economy since none of his snake oil is doing much good.

Download and run Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware. It's free and very effective.

Ditto. This is the one free program that will completely remove Vundo/Virtumonde. Most of the pay programs will not.

The Hijackthis Home Page offers a FREE and great way to get an analysis of your system and then expert help, also free, on eliminating spyware.

This is an industry standard. All you do is this:

1) Download the latest version of Hijackthis.
2) Run a scan of your computer.
3) Upload the completed scan log file to one of many sites that support Hijackthis analysis.
4) Get a report and suggestions back from a human being volunteer that has experience in these matters.
5) Get step by step help from this human being in downloading and using whatever FREE software you need to fix your system. They will walk you through every step and stay with you until it is verified by another scan/log upload that the problems are fixed.

I've had to use hijackthis three times and each time it worked great and solved the problems. Even one tricky one that almost no one had ever even heard of!

Good luck.

I’m deluged with spam

They flood the email ISP; thus, you get the emails.

I use Mailwasher to preview all ISP email before I ever open any.

Single email address version is free for home use.

I use ePrompter to preview email at Yahoo and Gmail. It is free/donationware for home use.

What virus checking/adware programs do you use?

I recently changed from AVG to Avast, as it runs more smoothly on my computer. AVG became glutware, sadly. Both AVG and Avast will do incoming and outgoing email scans.

“superAntiSpyware cleaned up the PC in one scan..”

“Download and run Malwarebyte’s Anti-Malware. It’s free and very effective.”

Spending a lot of time on the net looking for solutions to some friends problems I kept seeing that running a scan with those two free programs in succession did a great job of cleaning everything out.

I have been using them for a couple of months now it is a nice 1-2 punch.

harpu always remember to update the new program that you just loaded before you do your first scan (and all future scans of course), you probably know that but some people don’t.
