Sean Penn playing Larry in Stooges movie
Houston Chronicle ^ | 3/28/09 | (none given)

Sean Penn is going slapstick. MGM says the double Oscar winner has signed on to play Larry in the Farrelly brothers' big-screen update of The Three Stooges.

Jim Carrey was in negotiations for the role of Curly, said MGM spokesman Grey Munford.

The studio first featured the Stooges in a series of shorts and features beginning in 1933. Munford would not confirm reports that Benicio Del Toro will play Moe. He said filming begins this fall on the comedy, which is expected to be released in 2010.

Hit him with a hammer, twist his nose with pliers, take a saw to his arm, kick him in the ass.....I'm still not going to watch Penn.

I detest Penn’s politics (and that of his father BTW) but I respect his acting. Also love the Stooges and enjoy Jim Carrey. I will probably see this film at some point - although I personally doubt that they can recreate the magic that was Moe, Larry and Curley.

This is an affront to the Howard (Horwitz) family. Leo Penn was an ardent supporter of Adolph Hitler until he broke the Molotov-Rippentrop Treaty with Stalin, his other hero. The Stooges lampooned Hitler at every opportunity.

In Cypress and Athens in the Med those folks are NUTS about the stooges. Insane crazy and episodes are played on the walls of the open courtyard bars and cafes. Their idea of a great night out is a Stooge’a thon !

Funny stuff !

Then there’s always a John Wayne movie dubbed in italian ......Buuuenaseria Senoritaaaa !

I’ll pass on this Sean Penn movie like the rest of his crap.

Me too. I really enjoyed “The Thin Red Line” — he was good in that.

Can’t stand Jim Carey, not even for 2 minutes. He makes my teeth ache. So I won’t be going to the 3 Stooges movie — not if he’s in it.

Instead of thinking of Sean Penn being a pothead like Spicolli, I think of him as another Adolf Hitler sympathizer and even looks like him with is nasty demeanor.

He was great in Mystic River. Of course Clint Eastwood directed him.

Jim Carey was very funny in Liar, Liar and Bruce Almighty.

There was a made for TV movie about the stooges a few years back. I was exited about the show, and set the DVR to record it to DVD. That DVD became a coffee coaster, because the show was a hot stinking, steaming pile of cow-pie. The acting was terrible and it was impossible to believe it was the 1930’s 40’s and 50’s.

Granted, passing yourself off as a huge celebrity in a movie is one of the most challenging bits of acting you can do, but it has been done. The Buddy Holly Story, la Bamba, Walk the Line, and even Kurt Russel as Elvis. But somehow doing a successful imitation of the stooges on film, even for Sean Penn is going to be a tough nuk to crack, and I do mean nuk.

I think of, for example, the Beverly Hillbillies movie. That was one of the all time great TV shows but the movie was pretty awful. I think the Miss Jane character was semi-OK (I think it was Lily Tomlin, no?) but the rest - well once you have the initial characters in your head everyone else comes up short.

Which is why 99% of Stooges fans don’t like the post-Curley Stooges shorts. Shemp, or the others may have been “good”, but they weren’t Curley. It’s an almost impossibly high bar.

"Also love the Stooges"

I've purchased and have been watching the recently released collections of their film shorts. They are well-done, and the quality is excellent. I highly recommend them. So far there are five volumes that have been released. These run from 1934-1948. The last volume includes Shemp, who replaced Curly after his stroke.

Shemp Howard had the most viable film career outside of the Three Stooges. Moe appeared in a couple of films.

They almost reunited for Blazing Stewardesses but the Ritz Brothers ended up with the part (I think because of Larry’s failing health).

Yeah I do remember that about Shemp. And that’s more or less my point. Shemp had too hard of an act to follow when Curly had to retire. Objectively Shemp was great - it’s just that he wasn’t Curly.
