Dogs may be a man's best friend, but for one American woman only an anteater will do.
Angela Goodwin of Oakridge, Oregon shares her home with a Tamandua anteater called Pua. In deference to Pua's tropical origins, Ms Goodwin dresses her in jumpers to keep her warm in Oregon's cool climate.
"I started putting little sweaters on Pua and she didn't seem to mind so now she's got a whole wardrobe of clothes," she said.
Anteaters are known to be intelligent animals and, according to Angela, are extremely loving towards humans.
"They adapt very well on a personality level," said Ms Goodwin who is a freelance writer and exotic animal educator.
The pair are so close that mistress and anteater share a bed.

It’s a very pretty animal. Nice to hear they have personalities that can make it possible to have one as a pet.

Hey it's Pua! I'm on her mailing list.
I've taken care of two of these as a zookeeper. They are the coolest animals ever, but they do smell and feeding them is very messy.

Anteaters in nature have very few, if any, predators. The hyocyanic acid in the ants concentrates in the meat of the anteater thereby making the muscle of the anteater inedible. Anteater’s kidneys also process the hyocyanic acid and are immune to the renal toxic effects of the chemical.

The girl that cares for the anteater had a stainless steel water bowl that had big holes in it,lots of holes where he played with it I don't think they could puncture stainless steel, at least the ones I took care of never did. In the wild they use the claws to tear up wood and termite mounds, looking for insects.
I never had any issue with the claws while holding them, though other people did. The female would only dig in if something scared her, but I only had to tell her to stop and she would. The male had a tighter hold, but he would listen to me too. Good little anteaters!
