Some years ago, when I was young and green in judgement, just graduated from college, I moved to Allentown, Pennsylvania, so as to be closer to aunts and uncles and cousins.

I myself had been born and raised in Nebraska; the parents and older siblings had been born and raised in Pennsylvania and New York, before moving to Nebraska, a trek for which their families never forgave them. The parents and older siblings took to Nebraska like ducks to water, but I myself had always dreamed of, fantasized about, living among hordes of wonderful caring loving relatives.

And so when I could, after most of my own family had departed this time and place, now laying among the flowers and trees and fauna of the Sandhills of Nebraska, I took off for points east.

Relatives aren't all they're cracked up to be, but that is neither here nor there.

You must have been crazy! Those pauses for various domestic duties intensified the suspense.

There’s a writer you remind me of, his name is Kent Haruf.

Those pauses for various domestic duties intensified the suspense.

You're aware of the story of the William Rivers Pitt, I assume, madam; that 740-cubic ton pile of antique swine manure dating from circa 1875 until 1950, which is a prominent landmark on this property.

It sort of resembles a miniature Jungfrau, that mountain in the Swiss Alps.

The cats left the coyote alone when I yelled at them to cease and desist.

No, I'm not, do tell.........

I looked up "William Rivers Pitt" on Google and it referred to someone who posts on Democratic Underground ??????????

Great story, Frank. Except that my gums were hurting throught the reading :)

Auntie Mame, yes, that's the WRP Frank's referring to. His Jungfrau is named after him. The human Pitt has been well documented on our own DUmmie Funnies developed by PJ-Comix.

I live out on the eastern slope of the Sandhills of Nebraska, madam, on a piece of property that was homesteaded circa 1874 by a family that wished to raise pigs.

They were very good at it, and raised generations of purple- and blue-ribbon-winning pigs circa 1875 until June 1950, when the barn burned down, after they switched from raising pigs to raising cattle.

There is a mound here, circa 740 cubic yards in bulk, near where the barn had been. It grows green and lush with all sorts of flora, both decorative and useful.

To the outsider's eyes, it looks just like another bump in the terrain; just like so much ordinary dirt.

Someone born and raised in the Sandhills would recognize it as a "man-made" mound, but nothing more than that.

Old-timers and soil scientists however know what it really is; antique swine manure, and apparently of a pristine quality, 100% natural, no chemicals.

Immediately upon learning of this, I baptized it the William Rivers Pitt.

The saga of the William Rivers Pitt--because, really, it is rather remarkable--has been covered much at conservativecave (although not lately, because I might mess with an ongoing doctoral thesis about it, by yapping about it too much).

The saga's at least twenty chapters long, and if I get energetic enough, and the doctoral thesis is done, I just might gather it all together and tell it again.

You know, sir, someone at conservativecave said that franksolich is the only one who could write to make a heap of pig excrement interesting.

I’ve never been sure if that was a compliment, or otherwise.
