ST. LOUIS --A man who shot and killed a pit bull on the street this morning told police it had been attacking his own dog.

St. Louis police say the man called 911 to tell them what he'd done.

He told officers that the pit bull was attacking his dog and another one.

A department spokeswoman said she didn't have any further details on who owned the dead dog or if it had been on a leash.

It happened about 7:30 a.m.

There is nothing ‘happy’ about this.

That said, I don’t blame the man if thats what was happening. I will do the same should I be in a similiar circumstance.

“A department spokeswoman said she didn’t have any further details on who owned the dead dog or if it had been on a leash”

Hmm. Interesting. Did they have any information about whether it had been recently groomed?

“if it had been on a leash”. Man they reach hard for anti-gun material

If you read the article, a witness said that the pit was just sniffing the guy’s dog. Hmmmmm....

Yes, your dog shouldn’t be roaming loose, but did he need to shot it?

It is not a happy ending when an animal dies bacause the animal’s owner was not living up to their responsibility.

Over the years we have had to shoot dogs that were attacking livestock and it never made us happy. Some times the circumstances require actions like this; but the owner needs to face punishment for allowing his dog to run loose to begin with.

Owning an animal is a great responsibility and many people fail their animals. That is just a simple fact, no one is forced to have animals so the punishment should be fairly severe when one shirks the job they signed on for when getting the animal.

I have been told, repeatedly, that attacks like this are rare.

Darrell Milsap, who lives on Pennsylvania Avenue, told a Post-Dispatch photographer that he saw it all. He said a man was walking his dog on the street when another dog approached his dog and began to sniff it. The man then pulled out a gun and shot the other dog.

"That's just what dogs do, they sniff each other," said Milsap.

My daughter had her dog on a leash in the park the other day and another dog owner with a pit on a leash was there both dogs sniffed each other out and went on about there business. Very plesent confrontation. I have nothing against the breed, my normal complaint is with the owner. Keep your dog in your yard or on a leash, and pick up the crap.

Do you think it’s healthy to get so much pleasure from a dead dog?

I can’t really blame the guy, though. Being approached by any off-leash dog makes me nervous, and it’s even worse when it’s a big one.
I’ve managed to turn a rottweiler around mid-charge, a few german shepherds, and probably millions of chihuahuas.
The only pit I’ve confronted was called off by his owner, otherwise I have no doubt it would have attacked my dog.

An unleashed dog vs a leashed dog is actually a toxic combination. The leashed dog may feel threatened (because it is restrained) and growl/bark, whatever, and the pit bull will respond like a pit bull would respond.

KEEP YOUR FREEPIN’ ANIMAL LEASHED AND UNDER CONTROL!

We don’t kill things because of what they might do.

Once the pit bull attacks your dog, it may be as good as dead.

There is so much senseless tragedy involving dogs because pigheaded people refuse to comply with leash laws.

We don’t kill things because of what they might do.

Sure we do.

Why do you think wolves are nearly extinct in the lower 48?

Why do you think sane people kill poisonous snakes they find in their yards?

I put pit bulls in the same category. Too dangerous to have around. You keep the dog on your property and I won't do anything about it. You let it out on my property and it is dead. Just that simple.

We are a nation of laws. One cannot go into the street and shoot something because you are afraid of what it might do.

As I pointed out, a witness quoted in the article says that there was no attack as Mr trigger happy claims.
