And as a conservative, it is none of the governments business what I do with a pet.
Wrong. We have standards and laws specifying animal cruelty, and neglect, and abandonment of domestic animals. You don’t have carte blanche to do whatever the hell you want and torture your animal to death. There are what we call ‘humane’ standards that society has developed with respect to animals. They vary from community to community, and country to country, but we have them, and that’s what this guy violated.
If he wanted to be responsible and no longer wanted the pet (and it’s obvious he didn’t because only an idiot lets an animal go because they outgrow a cage) he could have taken it to an animal shelter. He could have offered the bunny for sale to someone on craigslist.
I am getting you don’t understand that domestic prey animals like house rabbits have no survival skills in the wilderness, they have never lived there, and have zero familiarity with anything. They don’t know to be afraid of cars, they sit out in the open unaware they are targets for hawks and other things that might swoop down and kill them. It is not a favor to do this to a domesticated prey animal.

I’m sorry, that is just not true. We have always been a country of laws. It is why we are conservatives rather than emotion-based, feel-good liberals.
You are basing your judgment on emotion. Weeping for the poor animals. I am more concerned with governmental abuse of humans. Such as allowing people to murder the unborn.

Hardly, you are the one lashing out with emotion. I base my reasoning on biblical principles and that we are to be responsible for our actions and decisions. You are trying to change the issue to other things (abortion, etc) because you’re losing the issue we’re discussing.
The guy could have gotten rid of his pet any number of lawful ways, and he chose instead to abandon and dump the animal. Where he lives (and where most people live) that’s either an ordinance violation or a misdemeanor. Nobody forced him to BUY the pet in the first place, but he did, and he has to be responsible for its welfare because it is a domesticated animal. If he no longer wants to be responsible for it, he needs to either turn it into a shelter, sell it to people who will be responsible for it, any number of things that he could have done that are lawful, responsible ways to do so.
Your attempt to bring up other issues unrelated to this is a deflectionary tactic and I see right through it. If you are so concerned as you say you are about the other issues why then are you wasting your time arguing with me about this? You must be bored.
Bottom line, is that we have animal cruelty laws, we have animal welfare laws, and it not out of line for the state to expect people who buy a domesticated pet animal to follow through and take care of it, or if they don’t want it anymore, to do so in ways that are not cruel or simply abandoning it altogether. There are laws that say you can’t just abandon your animals. Most communities have them in some form.
And how we treat our animals is a measure of how we treat people. I wouldn’t hold a person in high regard if he beat his dog all the time. Or the dog was always sick and looking not cared for.
Not for everyone. Your view is terribly narrow. Your problem is that you type before you think.
In the final analysis though, a pet is property. You're right, when a person must choose between the pet and meeting obligations to their family or other people, the priorities are obvious.
Such a choice from the narrow perspective of the animal may be considered cruel by ‘animal rights’ activists, but they're operating on their emotions without consideration of the larger personal context. They are (intentionally or not) trying to take our rights away.
Government should protect our property rights and not be dictating how you and I must act based on someone else’s (oligarch's/bureaucrat’s/activist's) feelings.
They can't be trusted to do the right things in their own lives, how is it better that they dictate how you and I live?
It is scary to think about. I don't trust them & I resent them quite a bit. I think for far too long we have been told what to do.....However I don't want to end up in jail for breaking the law either. I have to raise my daughter who is 9. I am sick of the people we vote into office who say they represent us being such liars. They are for themselves IMO & very few really care about what we the people want....

If he put it for free on craigslist that is alright I think by their rules. (Although I don't like to think about what happens to animals that are offered for free.) Animals aren't supposed to be sold there. I know people who have gotten all kinds of threats for trying to sell puppies on there. Plus they flag your posts. He should have found the rabbit a home. I was wondering how they tied him to the rabbit. As far as I know in NJ you don't need a license for a rabbit...yet. Our shelters are now overflowing with pets people can't afford. In my town they had to put cameras up to stop people from going at night & abandoning their pets because they can't afford the $50 plus dollars they want to take the animal. When I worked at that shelter years ago it was done by donation but now they just can't afford to take in animals for free or $10. If they catch you abandoning your pet there is a fine & you may get arrested. People ought to think long & hard before they buy pets. I hate impulse pet buyers. I think that is another reason we have such problems with dogs that end up in shelters. They see the cute little puppy, have no clue that it will grow up into a big dog that needs to be walked a few times a day etc. It gets too big for their apt or jumps on their children & off to the shelter it goes. Or they abandon it. Very cruel to do to any animal.
thank you, this is what I am trying to say. Along with rights (like owning property, live or inanimate) come responsibilities. There are right and wrong ways to be a pet owner, and there are right and wrong ways if you decide you no longer want that responsibility. He picked an irresponsible way, and it happens that where he is there is a penalty associated with being an irresponsible pet owner who did what he did.
