Mason Finley, Buena Vista High School senior, smashed the national high school discus record by more than two feet Saturday during the High Altitude Challenge in Alamosa.
Finley threw 236-feet 6-inches, out-distancing the 2001 record set at 234-feet 4-inches by Niklas Arrheniusor of Orem, Utah.
Finley surpassed the Colorado record and his personal best April 20 during the Gunnison Invitational with a throw of 223-feet 4-inches, but April 23 during the Buena Vista Invitational he threw the disc 214 feet.
He has signed to compete on the University of California Los Angeles track team next season.

Mason Finley throws the shot put during the Buena Vista invitational Thursday
I thought I was pretty good in high school. I threw it 134 feet. That is over a hundred feet less than him.
Its a whole lot easier at 8000 feet. ;-)
Yeah, but he’s at altitude.
I was a bit better in college. I threw the heavier college discus 136 feet despite the fact I was a hurdler, long jumper, and sprinter. Every now and then I would compete in the shot or discus just to let them know a skinny kid could do better than they thought.
I never won either but did throw better than the poorer ones and those guys typically outweighed me by a hundred pounds.
Finley passed the record on the second of three throws during preliminaries at the meet.
He declined to throw in the finals allowing him to return for the Buena Vista prom, Saturday night.
Like throwing a frisbee ?
8-)
Pretty long throw for a discus.
Tough to throw a football that far ( for me now ).
