Quakes Came Just Over Four Hours Apart

A magnitude 4.4 earthquake centered near Malibu rattled lots of nerves across Southern California Friday evening, but there were no reports of any injuries or serious damage. It was followed a few hours later by a 3.1 shaker, which went largely unnoticed by most people.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the first temblor struck in the Santa Monica Mountains at 6:11 p.m., about 7 miles northwest of Malibu. The second one struck at 10:34 p.m., in the same area.

The larger quake jiggled the greater Los Angeles region during afternoon rush hour and was felt as far north as Lancaster in the Mojave Desert to southern Orange County, according to online resident reports gathered by the USGS.

Kerstin Edwards, who lives a few miles from the quake's epicenter in Westlake Village, said she felt the temblor while she was upstairs in her house. She noticed no damage.

``It started off as a strong jolt,'' Edwards said. ``It's definitely one of the bigger ones I've felt.''

I’m glad you do. I, however, would not remain in that state.

I’d bet a cup of coffee more are killed in Tornadoes every year in Georgia, than are killed by quakes in California.

This is bad. The strain is being gradually relieved. To destroy LA and remove California as a Blue Rat state, we need a massive 9.0 at least to destroy the city completely.

Wussies...just do what REAL Californians do during an earthquake - stand next to the big screen TV and make sure it doesn’t fall over...then get on with your life...

Shoot, when I lived down there I didn’t wake up for anything less than a 5.0. Unless it was centered right under my house, of course.

That may be true however you know a when Tornadoes are going to hit the fear factor with quakes are much greater you never know when they are going to hit I was in a building that came down in the Northridge quake the fear meter went off the scale been in a few tornadoes in Michigan and it’s not the same.

lol... I don't even live in tornado country and I know that's false. There have been occasions when they drop down right over a town, at 3 a.m. wiping out the entire town, killing many, with little or no warning.

As opposed to seeing cows fly by my windows into the next county, I'll take a shaker any day of the week.

I left Cal. for your glorious state, Georgia. I am here now but I miss Caifornia every single day. Here it is, where did you go to school? Who is your family? The right answers go a long way here in Atlanta. There is not a day I don’t wish I was home.

We had a tornado warnings all last night here in Georgia. It gets where you just get use to seeing it on the television. But the most dangerous are the middle of the night and we live in a house without a basement! We are also surrounded by beautiful tall trees.I was raised in CA and lived there until 15 months ago. This waiting for the tornadoes is the pitts! The quake comes you ride it, pray like you have never prayed before and then you go to work to help those that need it!
