Vow-renewal ceremonies are always inherently offensive, but Seal and Heidi Klum really took the (Hostess, cream-filled) cake when they decided to give their ceremony a white trash theme. Which begs the questions: Is the concept of white trash offensive? Is it mostly or only offensive when implemented by a German model and a British black man wearing a mullet and American flag jacket?
Heres the thing with Heidi Klum: Shes never been one to tread carefully when it comes to issues of race, either because shes German and doesnt understand Americas brand of political correctness, or because shes kind of dumb and incredibly self-centered. (Well venture to guess its a combination.)
For example, we had never really thought much of Heidi and Seals relationship, despite their best events to prove to a mostly uncaring public how in looooove they are with one another, until we discovered that she got a tattoo on her forearm made in the same color as Seals skin. Then there was the time she dressed up as the Hindu goddess Kali for Halloween, wearing someones faith as a garish and attention-grabbing scary costume. And now this.
We cant help but feel that anytime someone pokes fun at a culture - especially one to which they dont belong - they had better be careful in expressing why they chose to do so and what they hope people will take away from it. We think this also holds true for subcultures that are defined by race or nation. We cant help but feel that if Heidi and Seal had decided to throw a Chola or AZN or Gangsta-themed party, the outcry would be greater, as was the case when mostly Anglo Tulane students threw a party based on Mexican stereotypes. And while weve been known to poke fun at the stereotypes associated with white trash culture or the fashions worn by chongas, we like to feel that being from Florida and being directly related to people whose houses have wheels and whose trucks do not (Thanks, Jeff Foxworthy) and having been something of a chonga ourself mean that our jokes come from a fondness for these cultures. Because, heres the thing: We dont think were above white people who are poor and speak with a drawl, and we dont think were above girls who wear hoop earrings and think acrylic nails are pretty. We dont think were above people because they choose to wear a certain style of clothing, or because they come from a certain part of a country.
We kind of get the feeling that Heidi and Seal, being kazillionaires who are not American, think they are somehow hilariously above this inherently American subculture. And, you know, t isnt even the fact that a black man is making fun of a white subculture (Because, seriously, go ahead) or even so much that two Europeans are making fun of Americans that bothers us about this, really. Its the fact that two extraordinarily wealthy people think it cute or amusing to make fun of a segment of the population defined by their poverty. That, to us, is tackier than any lawn ornament or regional hairstyle.
But maybe thats just us.
What do you guys think of Heidi and Seals decision to throw a white trash vow renewal party?
It’s 5th wedding. They renew their vows every year.
If you ask me, it’s a way for dipwad Heidi to feel all ‘bridelike’ once a year. Otherwise known as Narcissist Personality Disorder.
BFD.
Hope they had fun.
She’s mega hot, if you hadn’t noticed.
omg, this is the 5th time!
I don’t care at all about these two people, but I do wonder why vow renewal ceremonies are “inherently offensive”?
“Shes mega hot, if you hadnt noticed.”
On the other hand, he is one FUGLY fellow.
With Heidi with him, I doubt he cares about what others think of him.
I always felt the whole concept of white trash attributed undesirable characteristics on nonwhites by default. So that’s where it is racist - but not versus whites.

She’s a mega narcissist...ever listen to her actually talk???
Listen to her talk?
I ain’t queer, buddy ;)
OK.
You’re focusing on the WRONG ONE.
Just sayin’ ;)
I thin the writer was just being snarky
< spacey valley-girl-type voice > “I don’t think there really is a red or white - it’s all just shades of pink...”
I think it’s hilarious, actually. Point is taken, however, that in the same coffin that the word ‘nigger’ was interred, a mass grave would have been more appropriate:
‘White bitch’
‘Kike’
‘Hymie’ (as in ‘hymie-town’)
‘Wetback/spic’
‘Cracker’
‘Redneck’
There are others, but Jamie Foxx is still drawing a paycheck when Don Imus can’t. Wanda Sykes got attaboys, and Trent Lott lost his job.
Show me a bigot, I’ll show you a statist. It’s the only way they can hold power - either play the races off one another, or play the classes. Either one works.
Oh. My. Word. Where are the anti-smoking police??? Is that ciggy lite? Isn’t Heidi preggers??? Smoking whilst preggers is worse than...well, waterboarding in our culture.
And...remember, if you are fortyish...your own mom may have smoked while carrying YOU!!!
"If you smoke at your wedding..you might be a redneck."
I think they deserve each other. I uses to watch Project Runway which featured Heidi Klum until she said that she would leave America if the American people did not elect Obama I think she should leave anyway and take her ugly pit faced husband with her
