Beef farmers can breathe easier thanks to University of Alberta researchers who have developed a formula to reduce methane gas in cattle.
By developing equations that balance starch, sugar, cellulose, ash, fat and other elements of feed, a Canada-wide team of scientists has given beef producers the tools to lessen the methane gas their cattle produce by as much as 25 per cent.
"That's good news for the environment," said Stephen Moore, a professor of agricultural, food and nutritional science at the University of Alberta.
"Methane is a greenhouse gas, and in Canada, cattle account for 72 per cent of the total emissions. By identifying factors such as diet or genetics that can reduce emissions, we hope to give beef farmers a way to lessen the environmental footprint of their cattle production." Using information from previous studies, the researchers compiled an extensive database of methane production values measured on cattle and were able to formulate equations to predict how much methane a cow would produce based on diet.
The study was jointly conducted with the universities of Guelph and Manitoba, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and the International Atomic Energy Agency in Austria. It published recently in the Journal of Animal Science. The findings build on previous work by Moore and his research team on genetically selecting cattle that inherently produce less methane. While further studies are needed before bringing the research into general use, the work "promises significant improvements in environmental stewardship on the farm," Moore noted. The study was funded by the Canada Research Chairs program and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council.
these people are freakin idiots.
Them farting cows are going to be the end of us.
72% of Canada’s emissions? o.0
Farting is the only fun some poor cows ever have!
How cool! A new tool from a Canadian school to deal with bovine stool!
“cattle account for 72 per cent of the total emissions” Guess thay have never been to Moody’s on Sat. night for all you can eat, BEANS!

That's what got the dinosaurs. If you think cow farts are dangerous just imagine how much methane a herd of grazing brontosauruses could generate! Not to mention all their super-sized relatives!
My gawd. I hope the Hubble telescope finds another planet to live on.
I’m surprised they got this done - it’s Stanley Cup season.
The “Habs” got CRUSHED by the Bruins so they have lost interest!

It’s happened to everyone at least once. In an awkward silence on a date, or during your fifth grade clarinet solo, or in the middle of a business presentation, your body suddenly betrays you. “Beef farmers can breathe easier”
Nice touch.
Cattle don't produce methane. A odd parasitic bacteria does, and its metabolism can be disrupted many ways. If short circuited, the cattle would get more nutrition out of their food.
Yeah. It was great. Not so confident about tomorrow night's game at Raleigh though.

That looks interesting! The replacement for petroleum will likely come from military-funded research. A crucial role the military plays is sparking new technology. The green hippies are never the source of the real solutions. It’s terrible that Obama is working hard to gut military spending.
A cork?
LOL!!
Next thing you know they will be making the poor cows wear charcoal lined panties.
Metamucil? A cork?
I once heard about a farmer who gave green tea to the pigs. I don’t know what it did to the methane, but it supposedly made the smell better.
Ironically, the farmer’s name was Earl Gray.
