Barr Township, PA (AHN) - Two families who belong to an ultraconservative Amish sect were locked out of their homes Monday over the way they dispose of sewage.
The Miller and Swartenzentruver families were ordered out of their homes because they were using an outhouse and spreading the waste on their fields without proper treatment.
Building and health officials took the families to court after neighbors expressed fear that the practices would contaminate their fields.
The families say the health and building codes violate their religious beliefs.
A member of the sect was sentenced in March to 90 days in jail for contempt of court after he refused to bring two school outhouses up to code.
Secondly, there are building codes for outhouses? Who knew?
I’m curious of what the libertarian view of this is.
Diaper up them deers while you’re at it.
LOL! And birds and raccoons and bear, fox, chipmunks, etc.
Good for them. It used to be a free country. If you want to crap on your food, go for it. It used to be a regular practice, and you’d think hippies and tree huggers would be rushing to defend them for their ‘green bravery.’
This is the first time I’ve seen anything like this from the Amish.
Come back down to Earth Wisconsin. It’s natural.
No difference between an outhouse and your own septic system . Except in the outhouse you can read the paper.
Failed farming efforts is typical of third world countries.
What do you think brought ‘the fertilizer’ to your ancestors farm 150 years ago? An 18 wheeler from Agra Supply?
There, I have done it, I can now reason like a liberal.
BRING BACK OUTHOUSES. SAVE THE PLANET.
Does anybody realize what happens to the stuff thats left over from a sewage treatment plant once they get the water out of it?
We hand dipped out septic tank when I was a kid. threw it on the garden. Best year for ‘maters we ever had!
Now I know why they’re always baking Shoofly Pies! :)
I was stationed in Germany 1981-83 so think back it was the same decades before then; whenever we rolled our convoy across the local countryside, we smelled the farmers’ “s**tslingers” long before we saw them fertilizing the fertile German soil. Towed by tractors, they got the job done.
To the farmers, it was the smell of money.
“Does anybody realize what happens to the stuff thats left over from a sewage treatment plant once they get the water out of it?”
It’s called, ‘Milorganite’ and we get $25 a bag for it at our Garden Center.
Suckers. ;)
“Can I use Milorganite for my vegetable garden?”
“Yes. Milorganite is an excellent and safe fertilizer for all plants that grow outdoors, including vegetables and other edible crops. Milorganite is practically goof-proof since it won’t burn plants-even if it is over applied.”
The chance of disease from human feces is much higher.
Oh, dear.
well - as a libertarian and food handler......just dang....thats a public health hazard
Gubmint approved AND paid for... BTW
Yep. We’ve got 700 acres of fields around us and Mr. Agro-Grow is always visiting us with a load.
The state tests our well twice a year; it’s 300’ deep so no worries.
Been there. Was in Germany in 76-77 , we set up a radar site looking down a valley. This farmer came by spreading green fretilizer (right spelling),took us 1/4 the time to leave than to set up.It ain’t fair ,they add water.
And the USA. As surprising as it may seem the EPA promotes the spreading of septage on fields. Their definition of septage includes what you pump out of septic tanks and what you pump out of porta-potties.
The only mistake the Amish guys made was not getting the appropriate permits, and funding from the govt. to operate an approved (and promoted) septage disposal facility. Had they done that they could spread upwards of a gallon per square foot in their fields, and have a few truckloads a day to spread around.
Personally I think its a bad idea, but believe it or not the government doesn't. See Page 3
Hauler Truck Spreading-septage is applied to the soil directly from a hauler truck that uses a splash plate to improve distribution. The same truck that pumps out the septic tank can be used for transporting and disposing the septage.
Farm Tractor and Wagon Spreading-liquid septage or septage solids are transferred to farm equipment for spreading. This allows for application of liquid or solid septage.
In Obamaland there are codes for breathing and blowing your nose; who Blew?
When I was a youngster we would spread the outhouse cleaning’s on the corn field. You could see how much taller and greener the corn was in that spot from the edge of the field. It is good fertilizer. The Orientals use it all the time.
I'd never heard of that! I realize a lot of that overpriced crap is made from,....well, crap, but that's outrageous!
Ever dry up, up there? I think I may actually be able to till my garden tomorrow before the next 1-3 inches hits on Wed.
Bringing back septic systems, and other forms of land disposal would definately save the fishes!
As it is, fishing will be gone within 10 years, due to disposal of sewage in the waters.
All of it?
Really?
In Ireland - right now, it’s called slurry and I didn’t know whether it came from feed lots or sewage treatment but ewwwwww. Sure was green though.
Except for the mountain streams.
The bays and oceans are in big trouble.
So NOT all, then?
Ten years?
Here in California, estuarine fishing is down to about 1/20 of what it was in the 60’s.
Salmon fishing season has been called off for three years.
Nature doesn’t care, it’s all about the nitrogen.
Anyways, there are only a few human diseases that can be spread by human feces. It isn’t that toxic and basically nurses and orderlies handle it all day long from some very sick populations.
If the Amish families where healthy, they they are not spreading anything.
I’m not sure how long , if at all human e-coli last out side of the intestines.
I would imagine virus would last even shorter.
There are countless types of e-coli.
This is about permits and health nazi featherbedding to keep their 20 and out with a pension job.
leave the Amish alone, while I probably wouldn’t eat what theyre growing, why not let them do what they want if it’s not harming anyone else (also I have an aversion to govt getting involved in these matters)!
The big problem is the massive flows of heavily treated sewage coming out of the megalopola. In the SF Bay area, over 200 million gallons per day are dumped in the water.
The fish cannot reproduce in the dead water that results.
Our waste belongs on the land, where it can be used for raising our food.
Duluth, Minnesota has a fluidized bed system but I understand some flowage still runs into Lake Superior.

No reading done, get in do your business fast and get out...
This was a common practice in Germany when I was there ‘59 to ‘62. Honey wagons were common sights.
Yes the waste can drain in the water table for miles. We have to deal with this at our Boy Scout camps. The old latrines have to be pumped out now. You are not allowed to just let sewage seep into the ground like in the past. We had to spend $150,000 the past few years putting in a lagoon system for the primary buildings.
Too poor to have a bucket for this procedure? (joking)
Electric toilets (nuclear powered of course) Whoever came up with the idea of disposing feces in water wasn’t thinking long term.
Sure, sure. No doubt your ancestors also used crest tooth paste and deodorant. You probably also had reams of paper to use, and would scribble a single note on a piece of paper before throwing it away. And all the animals your ancestors killed and consumed were convinced to kill themselves for the common good...why your ancestors didn’t dirty their hands actually slaughtering animals...that was for the little people, who were stupid enough to make use of everything on their farm. What a luxurious farming lifestyle you all led...remember what they used to say? HTV’s family doesn’t manage to grow much food, but man, their S sure doesn’t stink like everyone else’s.
It really has been a very nice Spring. Actual, unpredictable SPRING-like weather for once. We’ve either stayed wet, or gone straight to hot & humid right off the bat, so I’m enjoying it!
I have a few things in but I do the bulk of it at the end of May so I don’t have to worry about frost for the most part. Husband has done the first tilling to delay the weeds. One or two more and we’ll be all set.
The greenhouse is packed, as it always is at this time, with flowers and tomato and pepper plants.
Been eatin’ asparagus for a few weeks. Man, I LOVE that stuff. :)
No Milorganite on my veggies, but I do use Garden Tone, or a standard 10-10-10 which I highly recommend.
“This is about permits and health nazi featherbedding to keep their 20 and out with a pension job.”
Exactly.
I’ve thought of those for when I retire to a cabin in the north woods with little or no amenities. Seems practical to me. :)
