LEON, N.Y. Police cracking down on rowdy Amish youths ticketed a teenager for having beer in his horse-drawn buggy when they pulled him over on a western New York road. They said the 17-year-old was charged with underage possession of alcohol after he was stopped by deputies late Monday night in the town of Leon, 40 miles south of Buffalo.
Detective Nathan Root said the teen admitted drinking beer, but passed a field sobriety test.

You shouldn’t drink beer when doing one of those Amish drive-bys.

Well, this sort of crackdown will end the scourge of Amish youths taking over Main Street for their midnight buggy drag races.

"Detective Nathan Root said the teen admitted drinking beer, but passed a field sobriety test."Of course is begs the question...was he really the driver?
To: Paladin2
How old was the horse?
Old enough to drink legally apparently. ;-)
I don’t know but a 22-year old guy is also in deep doodoo for procuring the beer for the minor.

If you get drunk while driving a buggy, and then get out and lead the horse and walk with it, is it still considered drunk driving?

not sure but if the vehicle, or in this case a buggy, is on a road surface, would it matter if you’re pushing/pulling it or driving it? the horse is under power either way.. just hope it’s a good follower. ;-}

I was real surprised to see drinking and drug use in a documentary about Amish teens. It showed the kids when they reached the age where they had to choose between an Amish life or common life. There were Amish kids selling drugs to each other and having sex. I didn’t know they gave their kids so much freedom.

A documentary, you say! Well, like the ancient Greek philosophers used to say, there is nothing more truthful than a impartial man with an idea and a camera who is pursuing a commercial venture.
The real problem is it would seem you base your perception of the Amish on a fictional creation...and even seem to think you know enough to pass judgment. I bet you’re an expert on Hitler and the Universe, as well...and can name a dozen ‘modern marvels.’
No wonder this country is in so much trouble. At least half the country must believe in 25 foot sharks than can chase a person from continent to continent...

As I understand it, there's a period of time in an Amish yoot's life called Rumspringen, in which the yoot can live it up like any other American yoot. After this period is over, the yoot can choose to rejoin Amish society or continue living a more decadent lifestyle.
