Word For The Day, Wednesday, May 13, 2009 - calamari
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary Word of the Day ^ | 05/13/2009 | The Slacker

Posted on 05/13/2009 6:04:45 AM PDT by VRWCmember

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

calamari • \kah-luh-MAHR-ee\ • noun
squid used as food

Example sentence:

Ophelia tried fried calamari for the first time from a small seafood shack near the beach.

Did you know?
The word "calamari" was borrowed into English from 17th-century Italian, where it functioned as the plural of "calamaro" or "calamaio." The Italian word, in turn, comes from the Medieval Latin noun "calamarium," meaning "ink pot" or "pen case," and can be ultimately traced back to Latin "calamus," meaning "reed pen." The transition from pens and ink to squid is not surprising, given the inky substance that a squid ejects and the long tapered shape of the squid's body. English speakers have also adopted "calamus" itself as a word referring to both a reed pen and to a number of plants.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Even if it's served in a "Hello Kitty" Bento box?

From your perverted Pittsburgh palate, probably not. Didn’t you grow up eating Czernina and Pierogi?

She is mildly attractive, but I would not by any stretch categorize her as "hot". I would call her "a not unhandsome woman".

The fact that she is married to such a dimbulb as the Kook indicates that she has some major mental deficiencies that make her very unattractive (sort of like Mary Matalin, another previously otherwise reasonably attractive woman whose years as Mrs. CarVILE have taken a major toll on her appearance.)

I find it very humorous the same people who gross out over squid, yet will eat cylindrical “meats” like hot dogs. Talk about disgusting!

I like the tentacles, lightly steamed, in a squid salad.

i don’t think she’s hot either and that characterization is strictly from male freepers who find anyone sprouting red hair [or blonde for that matter] is hot. i did find their love story touching regardless of the trollishness of the people involved.

As a kid, numerous times I had raw fish for lunch. Raw smallmouth bass and punkinseed are nowhere near as good as otoro.

Breading and friyng most seafood is bad. May as well have a corndog. It kills the flaovr and texture. Clams and oysters are OK fried if that only a small part of the meal.

Perhaps so.
But she sure has an awfully keen eye for greenbacks.
That's some credit to her "skill set". LOL

{and WTH is that around her neck, a dog collar?}

matalin and carville are parents of former students of xsbrownie’s school and they do a lot to fundraise even now. there was a dinner last weekend over which they presided and such “luminaries” as jim moran, mark warner etc. were in attendance [they somehow roped in Eric Cantor at some pretense of balance]. We were not interested in being in the same room with that group, so we passed on it.

Nope, she’s not hot. OK, but not hot.

I had a strawberry blonde GF when i was younger, she was SMOKIN hot, but I think it was the 36D’s as much as the hair that made me notice. She was smart and a super-nice lady, too. Wish i could have hung on to that one!
