They dropped their tiny dog off for grooming at the Castle Rock PetSmart. Minutes later, another dog mauled it to death...What troubled the family most though, was that Buddy had been killed by the PetSmart grooming manager's dog, a dog other workers call a pit bull. But a dog the owner calls in the police report, an American Bulldog Mastiff.

Poor little thing! A little Yorkie would be just a mouthful for a dog bred to kill soldiers in armor!

He's lovely too, bless him.

These powerful Pitbulls and some other heavyweight terriers should only be allowed to be kept by properly trained and informed owners, who understand that lax or bad discipline with these breeds can end up in disaster.

Big dog and little dog interactions need to be carefully monitored. Many little dogs consider themselves “alpha”, despite their stature. Many big dogs will take violent exception to this presumption. It is up to human beings, who are theoretically endowed with the power of reason, to keep the peace.

"an American Bulldog Mastiff"

The shelters often describe pits like this, too.

There are differences in the aggressiveness between/amongst breeds. As well as intelligence, and any other thing that makes up what certain ‘breeds’ are ‘bred’ for.

The soialization of any pet towards humans, or PVP (pet versus pet) is key. The owner of ANY animal is ultimatley responsible for the actions of thier animal.

There is no such thing as a specific breed incapable of the boundries of being properly trained.

As a general rule, nonagessive breeds are highly favored, yet there are those that choose to own breeds that could pose a threat to the uninitiated and uninformed.

I say that any American can have any domesticated pet they choose to have, But also (and you can’t legislate common sense), be responsible 100% for when YOUR PET messes up.

A groomer? = "A dog hairdresser"

It didn't work out as planned here, however one looks at this, that dog was either ill trained or was ill handled.

If that Pitbull was another Yorkie, a Jack, a Whippet or the majority of other breeds, we wouldn't have a dead dog here.

Any handler who has a powerful dog needs to be competent, anything else is reckless and irresponsible.

“But also (and you can’t legislate common sense), be responsible 100% for when YOUR PET messes up.”

That would be great if Beverly Hills plastic surgeons were keeping pit bulls and other vicious breed.. the problem is they are owned by and large by the poor, who don’t have a pot to piss in, financially speaking. “Holding them responsible” is illusory.

My idea of responsibilities reguarding pet ownership is not limited to financial compensation.
As a Conservative, Jail time is authorized for “leash law” breakers, that have little or no reguard for the actions of thier property. AND Uthanize the ill trained pet as seen fit by those that work with animals.

I agree. I have five dogs, three of them rescues, and when I take one to the Vet it never fails that I see a homeboy in there with a pit puppy. The homeboy (and there are many) is always dressed out in the crack showing pants and enough bling bling to sink a ship.

I’m always saddened by the thought that the adorable little puppy doesn’t have a chance in life. It will be chained to a tree on a four foot chain until it loses it’s mind. It’s only purpose in life is to scare people, cops, etc. away from the “stash”. Sickening!

I wasn’t even attempting to support the groomer ... merely pointing out that your statement presupposes that the groomer has little or no training in animal handling. This is probably not you run-of-the-mill Veda Salons.

I’m more inclined to believe that the groomer turned his/her back for a moment ... and Muffy became history.

Would you follow the same standard for someone walking his pet lion in a public area?

I don’t blame the dog, I blame the dog owner.

I have an American Bulldog, and he’s a big baby. Having said that, I do keep an eye on him around other animals (we also have two cats, which he plays with) because he’s 90 lbs and very very strong. He’s also very self confident, which can be intimidating.

There have been many occasions where smaller dogs got aggressive with him simply because of his size- but I’ve never once seen him get aggressive with any other animal, for any reason, and he’s actually taken bites on the face!

But while he’s perpetually smiling and cheerful, I can only imagine the kind of damage he would do to someone who threatened my family.
