Openly gay man voted prom queen at LA high school

LOS ANGELES -- An openly gay man was voted prom queen at Los Angeles' Fairfax High School in a campaign that began as a stunt but ended up spurring discussion on the campus about gender roles and teen popularity.

Sergio Garcia, 18, was crowned queen Saturday night at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.

"I feel invincible," Garcia said in his tiara and charcoal-gray tuxedo.

A few days earlier, he gave a speech that won over some cynics and led to an ovation and his unlikely victory.

"At one time, prom may have been a big popularity contest where the best-looking guy or girl were crowned king and queen. Things have changed and it's no longer just about who has the most friends or who wears the coolest clothes," Garcia told a gymnasium full of seniors. "I'm not your typical prom queen candidate. There's more to me than meets the eye."

Garcia assured the crowd he wouldn't wear a dress on prom night.

"I will be wearing a suit," he said. "But don't be fooled, deep down I am a queen."

The school, which sits at the end of the rows of chic shops on Melrose Avenue and was once attended by members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, has long been a haven for students who would be considered outcasts at many schools.

Yeah, now it's all about who has the trendiest proclivities, apparently.

Yeah it is about dumbing down the definitions and distinctions of everything that they see as an affront to them. This is a testament to the lack of education in public schools or rather the wrong kind of education.

Well, I’m so pleased that Mr. Garcia is really a queen, “deep down.”

Man, when perversion is treated as normal, Hell is right around the corner.

No, you cant protect them forever, but you can certainly equip them and give them the truth about our society, history, math, logic, and the ability to critically think and view the world. Protection comes from the understanding of the knowledge given to them. It is powerful, but only when they have a clear understanding of why and why not!

Mike,

While their is truth to what you say their is also truth to the fact most people are pretty set in their beliefs by the time they are 20. Some will radically change but for the most part people sway to the left or right just a bit.

Id rather have my 17yo going to college who has been taught right from wrong than send on who was taught wrong *is* right.

My mother would sit with me at night and watch the news, we would discuss it, she would ask me about what I learned at school and we would discuss it...

I’ll never forget the time in 7th grade I came home and told her how cool communism was... She shot it down in 5 minutes and I have never looked back.

The problem is not exclusively the schools but the parents not being active in their kids moral education. Chances are if you are a home schooler you ar active in your kids moral education (though you dont need to be a home schooler for that)

“good Christian School” good luck. If you find one you are blessed, it will probably be small, because people want the protection of the Christian school, but not the religion. If you are a strong Christian and your spouse as well, you will not get a better Christian education than homeschooling.....find a Homeschool co-op and share the education with like minded people.

If you insist on sending them to a Christian School look for one that holds to “classical education” principles. Your children will learn not just about God, Jesus and the bible, but will actually be highly intelligent in their thinking. Most people have to choose between good education and a Christian education. Sorry but it is true!

Problem with that is, and I wish the free republic home schooling cheering section would get this into their heads, due to health or finance or other situational reasons not everyone can home school. I love you guys deeply but you seem incapable of realizing not everyone’s lives allow for home schooling.

I’m not looking for a Christian school to teach my kids the roots of Christian theology as you say the basics are enough. Ill settle for a conservative ecumenical school who will leave social issues to me and tell me what they are teaching my kids. That’s all I need, I (and my church) will take care of their spiritual upbringing.

“I’ve attended both public and private Christian schools and am the son of a Baptist minister. While I agree that it is the parent’s job is to provide their children with a solid moral compass I’ve seen many sheltered children who are simply unequipped to deal with the realities that exist in the real world upon leaving the nest.

Mike I think the mistake many people make is in hiding their kids from the world instead of guiding them from it. From the time I was ten issues like Abortion, Homosexuality, Racism/quotas and the like were common discussion after dinner at my household.

While I still got a few shocks as to how bad things were in college I had solid enough roots to keep me grounded. I agree with you that this can happen in a good public school, a good private school, or with good homeschooling parents... there is no silver bullet.

But when public schools are increasingly of the mind that what they teach your kids is none of your business I would be mighty careful what public school you put your kid in..

I resent the “home schooling cheering section comment” but I realize you have no understanding of the advantages of home schooling, and for some of us, it meant a huge sacrifice, financially and socially in order to give this gift to our children. Not everyone can home school...but there is opportunity to always teach....it is what you do with your time, talent and treasure.....never settle....that is what the majority of parents are doing today...and this all started because of the article above...we see where the lines are crossed....I chose not to allow my children to be in the cross hairs of society, I CHOSE NOT TO SETTLE, but to have a say in where they spend the majority of their day and what they are learning....i would rather spend 1 hour and learn about the efforts of people like Benjamin Rush and S.Truth...than hours of social rights of gay people ...an inconvenient truth and the life of Barack Obama told over and over again.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I see a problem here.

The government forces children into the government schools and teaches them how cool communism (homosexuality, earth worship, atheism,...etc.) is. The parent then must: 1) Be lucky enough to find out this has happened, and 1) "unteach" what the government has forced on the child.

Looks like government abuse to me.

"I resent the “home schooling cheering section comment but I realize you have no understanding of the advantages of home schooling, and for some of us, it meant a huge sacrifice, financially and socially in order to give this gift to our children." -- Personally I don't care if you resent it, I'm not some mealy RINO that balks if you're offended. I know what I meant and if you took it the wrong way thats on you. I know there are huge advantages to homeschooling and I know its *always* a sacrifice. What *you* don't seem to realize is sometimes its too much of a sacrifice. I would rather have a healthy spouse and kids in a christian school than to risk the health of a spouse for the pride of homeschooling (and yes there is a huge sin of pride around FR on the part of *many* homeschoolers). ".i would rather spend 1 hour and learn about the efforts of people like Benjamin Rush and S.Truth...than hours of social rights of gay people ...an inconvenient truth and the life of Barack Obama told over and over again." The dichotomy you have created makes a great case for you but it is in fact a patently *false* dichotomy. There are charter schools, private schools, and even a few decent public schools left out there.

We pulled a stunt like that when I was a college freshman at a small liberal arts college in 1971. Only the guy who ran for prom queen wasn’t gay. He was a butt ugly hippie and had a great sense of humor.

He only lost by a few votes, but we really pi$$ed off the sororities and the administration.

Yes, for many reasons many parents must institutionalize their children for their school. It is a shame, but necessary.

We need orphanages too, but no one is claiming this is the best way to rear a child.
