Like A Virgin No More [Young Brides Dressing Like Tramps]
Newsweek ^ | 6/4/09 | Kayleen Schaefer

Posted on 06/04/2009 1:20:36 PM PDT by bdeaner

Two decades ago, when young girls wondered how brides were supposed to look and behave, they'd most likely conclude—with some prompting from Cinderella—that on their big day they'd be a princess. They'd be blushing, virginal and wrapped from head to toe in tulle and lace.

With this kind of reverence for the sacrament of marriage, is it any wonder there is such a high divorce rate?

I don’t really care what the dress looks like as long as it isn’t too bad.

It’s going to be off in a few hours anyway.

I don’t know any young bride that would truly dress trampy.....some weird, but not trampy.

That's kinda like the question in my part of town: What came first, her driving test or her pregnancy test?

When I was looking at wedding gowns three years ago, I couldn’t find any with sleeves. They just didn’t make them like that. If you were a modest enough bride to want your shoulders covered, you could get a dress that came with a lace jacket or capelet, modest enough, but unwearable for me.

I had to have my mother make my dress.

I support this. Why the pretense? Women with more than 10 sexual partners do not belong in a traditional white wedding gown. They should go dressed like Christina Aguilera.

Take your vacation down here at Fort Benning. There is a very favorable male to female ratio (from the perspective of the single female).

“With this kind of reverence for the sacrament of marriage, is it any wonder there is such a high divorce rate?”

While I agree, I think there are many reasons why the divorce rate is high. One is that I think some people have lost sight of the importance of the simple things in life, like just being together. Joy comes from within, and it’s hard to share joy with someone else if you aren’t happy and well grounded to some extent before marriage. I also think that some increase in the divorce rate over what it was 50 years ago is probably good (though not to the extent it is now). I say this because of the many years I watched my mother and father diminish each other.

I know this sounds so corny, but if I know a woman is throwing stuff out there like this, it actually makes me lose interest. I guess its the whole ingrained idea of me having to work for it. Who knows?

Holding all religious ceremonies and the seriousness of chilren in one. A marriage certificate in this day and age is little more than creating a girlfriend with paperwork. And a bad financial bet long term for the men.

I know the picture you’re talking about. That’s a naturally occurring mark. C-section scars are teeny by comparison, and they’re horizontal.

I was not suggesting there is a causal relationship between a bride dressing like a slut and the failure of marriage in contemporary society. I think it's actually a sign of something much deeper, along the lines of what you have pointed out. It's the symptom of the de-sacrilization of marriage, on the one hand, and a misunderstanding of the true function of marriage, on the other. Double failure.

First, marriage isn't about being madly in love with another person. That's the easy part. Marriage is about creating and sustaining a family, and in that function serving as the foundation of culture and society. When marriage loses its place and function, then the next step is the loss of the sacred aspects of the ceremony that marks its beginning: an outward sign of the degeneraiton of the meaning of marriage, sacramentally. At that point, what's the big deal with gay marriage? Heck, why not marry a goat if that's what you're into?
