To the average Southern hero, the slaves were mostly little black specs in far off fields. 99% of farms had no slaves. Making out that the civil war was about slavery would be like saying debating you would be about debating an intelligent adversary.
instead they HOPE that they can convince others of their hate-FILLED,SELF-righteous, sanctimonious, KNOWING lies.
it's really no more complicated than that.
otoh, some of them are so blinded by their inbred prejudice, that they have convinced themselves = this is called SELF-delusion & it is rightly considered to be a psychosis.

Yes, as a matter of fact. As a direct result of the war, my family lost over 3/4 of their land, which would be worth billions today.
Considering the long economic climb back from losing the arable land, clearing fields of timber and starting over, I'd definitely say there has been a lasting effect. The remaining fragment of those landholdings has been passed from generation to generation for over 350 years, but it was the least desireable of that land and is worth a pittance compared to what the value of the total holding would have been.
it was NOT anything near a majority of southerners. we RECOGNISED him for what he is: a SELF-righteous, hate-FILLED, DAMNyankee, who couldn't lead three drunken sailors into a tavern.

note: unlike your family, my family had little of monetary value before the war and even less after-wards, as we were poor AmerIndians BUT we understand that we lost most of our LIBERTY & have NOT recovered it.

The money was not the object, the land and the freedom to live/prosper that land conveyed was. The land was the means of production of sustennance and wealth. Nor has the liberty our ancestors fought for and lost been restored or sustained by those who claim to be liberators.
In the county I grew up in, four people admitted voting for Lincoln. They were asked to leave.

There are a couple of schools of thought on that, and I swear they both have good arguments. That they have an open season is due very much to the secretive nature of their subject, who it seems never let anyone close to what he really thought or valued. Even Wm. Herndon and his own wife found him perplexing, two people who knew him best -- but even they confess that really, they didn't.
That leaves us to infer intentions from actions and outcomes. And that is a slow, laborious, and argumentative process that can, absent the discovery of some hitherto-unknown text, run very easily for another 300 years.

The sole issue is whether the Union government and its polemarch, Abraham Lincoln, were justified in doing what they did, which was a war of conquest against free people, and the moral equivalent of enslavement (which they said they abhorred). They were not justified, they had no just cause. Whether or not Jefferson Davis had unpaid speeding tickets or four wives is irrelevant.
