Posted on 06/10/2009 8:45:04 AM PDT by cleveland gop
The week before our national championship is contested, this weeks tour stop brings us to the home of Elvis and Beale Street, Memphis Tennessee. Usually this week most of the top players on tour stay away from this event prepping for the open but 1 player in particular will be at the center of attention. As we all know Phil Mickelson is in the field this week after taking time off after learning wife Amy has been diagnosed with breast cancer. With surgery on the horizion, we probably won't see much of Phil for a while after next week. All the best to you Phil, we're all thinking of ya!!
The field is certainly not lacking of any talent as Justin Leonard, Players Champion Henrick Stenson, Sergio Garcia and Retief Goosen will tackle the classic design that TPC Southwind offers....

I figure with Phil in the field, I should throw this up. i almost forgot, John Daly is back too....
Maybe they will be paired up Sunday. Probably an early start if it happens, but they could get paired up...I would watch it.
sure wish Daly would win.......I like him in spite of hiself
GO PHIL GO!
Tell me how cool it would be if he wins this week, or better yet, NEXT WEEK????
2nd round update......
Weather has suspended play for the remainder of the day. From the looks of things about 1/3rd of the field has not completed their rounds and will be out first thing in the morning.
Brian Gay is your leader at -10, Phil is in the mix at -4 and it looks like Sergio and Padraig will go and play Bethpage a couple of days earlier than they wanted.....
Let’s see. I think it’s pretty certain David Toms makes the cut, considering he’s tied for 4th at -7. He still has 4 holes to play.
Looks like the cut line is going to fall at +1. If so, John Daly plays the weekend as he is done at even par.
Something else to consider. I highly doubt they will extend this thing to Monday, not with the US Open next week. Another lengthly delay and this turns into a 54 hole event, or worse.
Morning...where’s the coffee??
Saw some of JDaly...is he stealing clothes from MoBama?
Still, he’s a monster off the tee and it would be nice for him to do well.
Back in 1993, at the Western Open at Cog Hill, I saw him play #6 par three...on the green in 1, he putts, putts again, and one more time, then again...then again finally in.
The next hole, par four #7, big dog leg right...he drives over the willow in the corner and rolls up the hill maybe 70 yds from the green...
Coffee, no!! OJ for me!!!
Back in the day when John was having success, I saw him play at Firestone and would see everyone play 15, a 155 yard par 3. To actually watch him have to think cause he couldn’t bomb it was something to see....
Let’s see if they’re playing yet....
Uh, oh. Looks like Phil had a little problem finishing up his 2nd round. He’s finished at 2 under. Looks like the cut is staying at +1 and Daly is inside that at even...... Still some players yet to finish, though.
