Dear Freeper cat owners,
I'm having a problem with Norman the cat (see my homepage for a photo). He will not use the litterbox, and instead pees on my bedroom carpet. I have two cats and three litterboxes, which I scoop daily. I've been using the same type of litter for a long time. He has adequate facilities, he just won't use them.
Does anyone have any advice for me in this situation? I'm thinking of ripping up the carpet and putting down a hard surface floor. Please don't tell me to kill or get rid or Norman, as that is not an option. I've had him for nine years, and I'm very fond of him despite his faults.

BEER ROASTED CAT
1 cat cut into roast
1 can of Campbell’s Cream of Mushroom soup
1 cube of beef bouillon
1 clove of garlic
1 Fine Irish Stout, like Guinness
Cover and soak cat roast in salt water for 24 hours. Drain water and then cover and soak in beer for 6 hours. Drain and place in crock pot with your cans of soup. Add a clove of garlic, and a cube of beef bouillon. If you start to slow cook your cat in the morning with your George Foreman Cooker (or it’s ilk), you’ll have finely cooked feline in time for supper.
If a slow cooker is not available, a cat can be baked at 350 degrees for 2-3 hours in a conventional oven and still come out pretty good. Beer Roasted Cat is fantastic served with mashed potatoes, collard greens, and fresh, homemade egg rolls. When planning a full meal just remember- cat is a course best served hot!

Yes. that’s what 911 and the police are THERE for, right? To solve all of life’s little problems... screwed up oreder at McDonalds, cold coffee from Starbucks, paper boy won’t put paper on porch, cat won’t use litter box... the list goes on and on.
if the litter box has a cover, take it off... some wont go in. Also, the cat may have a bladder infection or had one and has associated pain with the litter box.

I was going to say the same thing. Take him to the vet and check out the urinary tract infection. THEN rip out the carpet, hard floors as so much better.
Just an idea - I tried every litter sold in all the major pet stores, and could not get my cat to use the litter box. Then a new vet told me to get Pestell, which is unscented http://www.pestell.com/pet/cat_litter/clumping/ .
It may be hard to get; contact the company and see who sells it in your area.
But after I tried the Pestell, no more problems! I’ve been buying that litter for years now, and all three of my cats have been using the litter box faithfully ever since!
I suggest a different brand of litter. I’ve found that changing to a plain, non scented type improved the situation greatly.
Also as someone else mentioned, a urinary tract problem might be a factor.
as others have said, he may have an infection or is upset by some change. does he poop in the box, or on the floor? Another thing to do is to buy a deoderizer at a pet store and use it on his chosen pee spot. If he now associates that smell with where to pee, a one time expression of being kitty-pissed may have turned into a habit. if there is some way to make sure he gets his own box that can help too. some cats don’t like to share.
Have you made any changes to his environment recently, such as an addition to your family or a new pet? Have you moved recently?
Our female dog recently became incontinent. I took her in for an exam, bloodwork and a urinalysis, which were all clear. She's now on Proin and is much better. We are still experimenting with the dose, but, so far, so good.

Unfortunately I already ate all my cats (and that last batch of feline-parmesan was quite good, I might add). Do you think your recipe will work equally as well with possum, squirrel or raccoon work, too?

He’s probably trying to tell you something. When I got our persian as a kitten 9 years ago. He would go to the bathroom on the bed of the person that gave him a bath. Because he would be so upset. I’ve been taking him to the groomers ever since. I have 3 cats and they do not like the smell of a dirty box. I have to get 2 brand new boxes with new litter once of month and I through out the old ones. Unless I take the time to take them outside and clean them with soap and bleach.(too much of a hassle) so I buy new ones.
