Germany poised to ban all violent video games
Yahoo ^ | 6/15/09

Like gamers around the world, Germans love their shoot-'em-ups. Sure, video gaming isn't quite the industry in Germany that it is in the U.S. (or some other parts of Europe), but it's still an enormous market for the industry.

Those days are quite likely to come to a screeching halt in a matter of weeks, as Germany is well on its way to banning all "violent video games," defined (via translation) as games "where the main part is to realistically play the killing of people or other cruel or inhuman acts of violence against humans or manlike characters."

Hmmmm... sounds like just about every game I play.

Maybe they can build a wall around Germany and shoot anyone trying to leave to buy a game in a free country.

Stupid nanny state, I hope someone will appeal to the federal government EU. The EU makes about 85% of their laws now. Germany is just a province.

Dennis Prager’s standard line on Germans is that they learned the wrong thing from WWII. Instead of learning that you need to fight evil - they learned that to fight is evil.

Crap, my favorite video games are all made in Germany. Gothic 1, Gothic 2 and Gothic 3. They are damn fun games - far better than world of warcraft.

I frequently play Warhawk, an online PS3 game where you use semi-realistic troop weapons, tanks, planes etc. to do battle against the other team. Even though it’s only rated T (not M), it sounds like the German ban will cover this as well. I’m sure there will be a healthy black market in these types of games if they are banned, but for an online game, I am thinking that they may really be able to shut it down. My German Warhawk friends might start a revolution if they shut this game down, they’re gonna be really mad.

I am very pissed. I go to the gothic webpage as often as I come here. I love that game. I have read interviews with all the development team, I read their annual report to their investors, I am freaking nuts about that game.

The German government is evil.

Check out this YOUTUBE clip of it. Listen to the awesome music, the graphics, the acting. It is the best game ever!

That is the music. The soundtrack is so good, I bought a CD of it. You could actually imagine going to a concert all to listen to it. It is a masterpiece.

So when I’m in Munich I can’t play “Grand Theft DC: America is Broke”? This is horrible news.

That version sucks anyway. Every gun you find, you have to keep fully disassebled until you're ready to use it. Plus, you only find said guns when you manage to kill the armed criminals who home invade you ever time you try to save your game. They outnumber you 4 to 1.

Gun assemby takes like 50 secret keystrokes and a secret word, along with a trip downtown to get the permit.

You actually spend most of the game standing in government lines, waiting for services.

That's what my 13yo son commented when he told me about Germany's ban on violence in videogames. This makes the first time he ever heard a news story before I did. ;-)

We don't allow him to play videogames with graphic violence, but shooting down planes, for example, is OK in a videogame as per our rules.

G1 and G2 are great, but G3 lack the “climate”, have you seen G4 screenshots?

Ah ha! A gothic fan. You have good taste. I started with G3 and only later did I play G2 and G1. As a result, I love G3.

If you were to play G3 as a stand alone game, I think that you'll see what the developers were after, in terms of atmosphere an so on. G3 is simply awesome.

G1 is also, in my opinion, one of the best games out there...

G4 looks like it will be good, but it is orientated towards appealing to people new to the series. That means it will not be as dark and desperate as G1. I think it will still have some redeeming merit to it. Most importantly, G4 is being made by a different development team. That will further shift the game away from G1.

The original development team for Gothic took their (rejected) pitch for G4 and re-imagined it in a whole new world. It is called “Risen” and the in game footage looks like it will be alot like G1. “Risen” should come out on October 3rd of this year.

I plan on getting both G4 and Risen.

G1 is still my favourite, I recommend you Polish-made modification - The Dark Mysteries. Piranha Bytes called it the best mod out there, it has english version also.

I didn't know about Risen, it looks awesome but by the screenshots I already can tell I'll few additional GBites of RAM...

I don’t have enough RAM for the Witcher. I have two worlds. I do not like it as well as Gothic, but it is still fun.

The Witcher is yet another Polish product. Movie based on the book is crap, but the book itself, oh man... you have to read it ;)
