Recession hits Royal Ascot

Recession hit the races at Royal Ascot yesterday with even royalty getting their outfits off the peg.

Frugal Princess Beatrice led the way in a Kate Moss for Topshop jacket, priced at a modest £90, with a pair of £65 two-tone shoes from Office.

Unfortunately, when you reduce yourself to the level of mere mortals, embarrassments can occur - and another racegoer was seen wearing an identical Philip Treacy hat.

Colour was most definitely the order of the day - led by the Queen who sported a bright yellow hat.

Also in the royal party, who arrived according to tradition in a fleet of landaus, were the Duchess of Cornwall, looking particularly chic in a bespoke Vivienne Westwood dress and coat, and Princess Anne who brightened things up in a tangerine-coloured jacket and hat with a startling pair of ski-type sunglasses.

Intriguingly, Camilla and Anne appeared to get on like a house on fire. While the rest of their party took their seats in the royal box for the first race, the two women stayed in the parade ring, gossiping about odds as they shared a form guide.

The traditional royal race meet appeared to have been hit by the current economic crisis in other ways. Although figures have yet to be confirmed, attendance was definitely down and staff at the numerous champagne bars stood around twiddling their thumbs.

Queen Elizabeth’s skin is younger and smoother than the Rottweiler’s.

I think Camilla looks lovely.

It is Beatrice, Fergie and Andrew’s daughter that wore the cheap stuff.

Surprised how lovely Princess Anne looks.

The Queen does have that magnificent Englisg complexion.

She is a very beautiful, dignified, and majestic 83 years old.

I think Camilla looks very lovely, too.

“Surprised how lovely Princess Anne looks.”

Loved the orange.

But I have no love for Camilla, and even LESS for UpChuck. ;)

Queen Liz got it exactly right.

Camilla got it all wrong.

ANne is a bit looney but I liked the hat.

Love Anne’s hat!
I wouldn’t wear it or any hat, but I love it.

Dear me, Prince Phillip is showing his age. I hope he's o.k., I've always liked him.

The Queen has lovely skin. Camilla, not so much.

Prince Charles looks silly as ever.

And I absolutely adore Princess Anne's hat. It's a good color for her, too. Not everybody can wear orange.

Great pics!

They all look lovely.

I had lunch in that area a couple of years ago. We ate at the Thatched Tavern, which was built in the late 17th century, on our way to Windsor Castle.

That entire area is beautiful, and Prince Philip’s cows are splendid. ;o)

The Queen's complexion is superb and she is very well preserved looking for her age. Didn't the Queen Mum live to be a 102 or something like that? She also had very good skin and not many wrinkles. Looks like Anne inherited the good skin genes from her mum and grandmum.

Leaving the personalities out of it for the nonce, one must say that the royals look very stylish. After all, they are fulfilling traditions of over two centuries. This may be meaningless to us, but to the English the traditional Ascot fashion parade is expected and eagerly awaited.

The Queen looked bright as a spring jonquil. Prince Philip picks up the Queen's color with the yellow flower in the lapel of his well-tailored suit. A striking couple considering their ages.

Prince Charles and Camilla's outfits harmonized beautifully. Very serene colors of muted gray and off-white. Her hat may look better "in person" than it does on the closeup, but the effect is very gauzy with the color going very well with her hair and skin tones. Charles' touches of violet and lavender on his gray suit broke up the light colors and lent a bit of perkiness to the couple's costumes.......and were apropos for this spring event in the sceptr'd isle.

Although caught by the camera in a Nancy Pelosi moment, Princess Anne carried off a color that could be considered garish if not accoutered perfectly. The hat works because it's proportioned smaller and more tailored than most Ascot hats. The higher-in-the-back collar on the suit provides a nice flow from hat to shoulders. The ensemble is quite striking on the Princess. The discreet pearls on hat, ears and neck toned things down a bit making the colorful outfit easy on the eyes.

All in all, the royal retinue looked wonderful and I'm sure their subjects in the stands had lots of fun and pride enjoying and dissecting what their First Family was wearing.

They actually make those silly hats look good. I notice they didn’t show what Camilla (the Mobama of the Royal Family) was wearing.
