Sheriff Says Deputies 'Did Their Job'
The Washington Post ^ | June 20, 2009 | Aaron C David

The Prince George's County sheriff's office has concluded that deputies did nothing wrong when they charged into the home of the mayor of Berwyn Heights during a drug investigation last summer and fatally shot his family's two dogs.

The findings of the internal review "are consistent with what I've felt all along: My deputies did their job to the fullest extent of their abilities," Sheriff Michael Jackson said at a news conference.

The announcement drew immediate condemnation from Mayor Cheye Calvo.

"It's outrageous," he said. "Not only is he not admitting any wrongdoing, but he's saying this went down the way it was supposed to and he's actually commending his police officers for what they did."

You might remember this case. The Mayor's house was being used as a drop for drugs and the SWAT team came in guns blazin.

From the article: “Lost in this whole incident was the criminal element. . . . In the sense that we kept these drugs from reaching our streets, this operation was a success.”

Geez,

I don’t want people wacked out on drugs, particularly kids who can get caught up in it and ruin their future. But come on! No sense of proportion. No sense of wrong doing. Just Union Thugs with guns. If they have to tear down the neighborhood to save they damn well will do that. Law and order conservatives will typically support this stuff as collateral damage. This kind of stuff happens all the time. Cause he is the Mayor he can at least get some traction fighting it.

Dismantle the whole system of Police, drug war, and safety tyranny and lets take on the consequences and see which is more tolerable.

Let's see, police hear gunshots in Columbine High School and they wait and see what's up. Same is true with the VT school shooter.

But, when someone gets some weed delivered to their front stoop, they decide to bust down the door, guns a blazing, blasting anything that moves.

Is that about the size of it?

How can the police not know who's house they are attacking with guns drawn?

I support and appreciate LEO's efforts and the risks they take each day to protect us, but these yahoo's are scary stupid.

Pretty amazing that they considered this a success. Drugs are available on any street corner and they consider this ‘bust’ for a couple pounds of pot a success.

Mayors are not immuned to drug dealing for cash on the side.

The Mayor wasn’t dealing drugs. His house was being used as a drop. The druggies had the box delivered and someone else came by to pick it up.

The cops knew it was drugs before it was delivered. They watched as it was delivered. They had the address well before hand.

A perfect example of the abuse of SWAT teams.

Many years ago when Saturday Night Live was funny they had a skit with Akroyd and Belushi as cops. They bust down the door of an apartment where two women (Radner, Newman) are smoking a joint on the couch, and proceed to shoot one and throw the other out the window, after which they grimly express “another drug related homicide”. These botched police raids with their post-raid machismo and official justifications fit that scenario perfectly.

“I support and appreciate LEO’s efforts and the risks they take each day to protect us, but these yahoo’s are scary stupid.”

The trick to maintaining public support for police is to convince you that you need them.

I don’t appreciate LEO because they are really good at writing reports and cleaning up messes after the fact. This stuff happens every day in this country. The only reason you hear about it is because they accidentally got the Mayor. Most times you might get a check from the county to fix your front door. but hey they could have killed somebody in the house with stray bullets. As long as people keep voting to fund massive police forces, 2.77 police per 1000 citizens in USA we are stuck with this kind of activity. I drove the 2.5 blocks to my local grocer and was confronted with 30 cops standing in the median, shining flashlights into my car as I drove past. We live in a police state that was built by conservative law and order republicans. De fund the police state by voting down every police fire bond issue you get a chance to vote on.

Seems they spend a lot of time doing revenue generation. IMO its not just a money issue. We need to push back on power hungry police departments.

The SWAT team was afraid of LABRADOR RETRIEVERS??????? If one was running toward a cop it was to lick him and look for a dog cookie. I am so sick of the war on drugs. How often does it target the really bad guys? Here in Oregon I have to have a prescription just for my allergy meds. So now I am the suspect. If my allergies act up and I refill too soon will someone bust down my door and shoot my 12lb. Rat Terrier?

I agree it’s not about revenue alone. It is about that because I guarantee they calculate an ROI for every new officer they higher. Performance reviews will basically benchmark and track and pace the ROI. But you are also right that the law enforcement machine is about controlling behavior. In the view of most, that is what good government IS. The essence of good government is controlling behavior. But now that the wheel has turned, and conservatives no longer control government, the police infrastructure will now be used against US. We built it because we wanted to control the behavior of our neighbors. Now they will control our behavior.

Is your statement one of absolutes by extension? or are saying no one is immune to do a little side work? From what I gather, after reading this story when it first broke, this is a regular guy, with a regular family.

There was no surveillance or investigation of the mayor, his wife or anyone living in the house to determine complicity. They know the packages were being delivered but, at no time, had any clue of the recipient of those packages.

The SWAT team is just stupid. They don't know where the mayor lives? Puhuhuhulease! Cops check up on everyone and they would most surely know where the mayor lives. Hell the mayor probably made sure to buddy up with Police force and even talked about being from such and such district whose children go to “that wonderful school, blah, blah, blah”.

they would know there were dogs on the premise and who was in the house or they would be negligent and reckless. Oh wait.....

Clearly, there is no monetary benfit in protecting citizens from murdering psychopaths. Take down a citizen for having weed in his house and the jurisdiction may get to auction off the house at a large profit. The system is corrupt.

The other poster implied the Mayor deserved the swat team because he probably was peddling drugs. There was never any evidence to suggest that in the earlier stories. That's why I called him/her an idiot. Was that too hard to follow?

I was in agreement with you and should have crafted my post a little better.

I was speaking to your idiot, lilylangtree.

I have posted before and in the same thread on this subject. You will find I am in agreement with you and even called the SWAT team incompetent or willfull.

I think lilylangtree was attempting to say, like Mayor Barry, of DC so goes other mayors.

You rightly called her for what she is.
