[history]
A Chicago police officer avoided jail time today for pummeling a woman who was tending bar, even though prosecutors produced a previously unseen video showing him beating someone else at the bar hours earlier.
Anthony Abbate was sentenced to two years probation for beating Karolina Obrycka in February of 2007. He could have gotten up to five years for the attack, which was captured by the bar's security camera and shown around the world.

“If I believed that sending Anthony Abbate to prison would stop people from getting drunk and hitting other people, I’d sentence him to the maximum,” Judge John Fleming said. “But I don’t believe that is the case.”
What a stupid a** judge. What better way to deter crimes such as this than send this corrupt idiot away behind bars. Where is justice? More Chicago way politics in the judicial system.
Judge John Fleming. Remember the name.
Sad and pathetic.

Doubtless.
Sarah Palin needs only to flip 10% or so of the women’s vote to be a serious contender in 2012. If I were her, I’d give Obummer a day or two to respond, and if he didn’t, I’d loudly ask why this was business as usual in his home town.

he did not believe the crime was serious enough and throwing Abbate behind bars would not be a deterrent to others. It would deter him from beating up women, at least while he was in jail. It probably wouldn't deter drunken Chicago cops from beating people in bars and getting away with it.
He noted that Abbate had no prior criminal history
If you don't count the guy he beat earlier......and the other incidents that probably got covered up because there was no video.
Abbate had faced several charges, including intimidation, conspiracy and communicating with a witness and official misconduct.
A fine upstanding young man.
The police department is seeking to have Abbate fired,
Gotta love unions.

as being aware of the officer’s tendencies
the po-lice department lawyer-ers

Nonsense.
This is an example of the 99% giving the other 1% a bad name.
Note how not only did this thug cop beat the crap out of a little girl but his buddies all flew in to lie to protect him.
This happens all the time. Cops won't turn in their rogue members and they will protect dick cops like this to the very end.
And the courts refuse to deal with these "legal" gang-bangers appropriately.
The whole thing results in the vicious cycle of cops being despised by the public for being thugs and justifying being thugs because they are despised.
Problem is we pay them for this and we dont deserve to be mistreated by them in exchange.

Those interested in this case and curious about the Chicago police rank and file reaction to this incident can go here:
“And any civilians or media types looking to start shit, just about every single reader here deplored Abbate’s actions and called for his firing. We also uncovered numerous instances where Abbate should have been fired before or never even hired. It was the political structure that permitted this aberration to occur, not the men and women who serve and protect honorably day in and day out.

I think that some police forces tolerate this sort of misconduct more than others. The cops here in Utah in my experience have been entirely professional and we don’t get many stories about out of control cops. When we do they are often fired. LA on the other hand has a real problem with rogue cops and falsifying evidence. Every city differs.
It’s difficult for cops to speak out because they never know who will be backing them up in tough situations. Serpico comes to mind.

Bootlickers are always wasting their time.
Even if your numbers were right, which they aren't, why would you want to deal with a force that is 1% bad?
Pilots can keep planes in the air 99.9999+% of the time. Would you fly if that number were 99%?
Why would you stop for a cop pulling you over if there were a 1% chance he'd shoot you and pretend you were armed with his buddies swearing to his lie?

“Under cross-examination, Abbate testified that he knew Obrycka had told him earlier not to go behind the bar but that he didn’t care what she said even though he knew he could simply have walked to his friend without going behind the bar.
Abbate, who is listed at 6 foot 1 inches tall and admitted he may have weighed more than 250 pounds at the time of the incident, said he was drunk at the time and felt threatened by Obrycka, who is 5 foot 3 inches tall and weighs 125 pounds.”
